i have a 78 1/2 ton with a 400 c6 9" my ? is it roesnt seem very strong im trying to pull a 7300 pound camper ive got a possibility of a a 460 with a c6 out of a camper how much trouble is it to install it but also have a 94 5.8 set up would it be easier and more economical to do the 5.8

I'm not an expert but I think the 400 and 351 (5.8) are from the same engine family so you are more likely to not have to deal with things like motor mounts, etc if you go with the 5.8.

ya i think they are but my 94 5.8 needs a rebuild at 220k the 460 only has like 60k

Either way it's gonna be some fun research to figure it out

Besides motor mounts I'm not sure what all else you would need to figure out. Probably radiator hoses, fan shroud? Also need to check the bell housing bolt pattern as the 400 used the same large bolt pattern as the 460 but the 351 used the smaller bell housing bolt pattern.

Hopefully someone who is familiar with these swaps can chime in.

460 trades with the trans, not certain on the motor mount towers. To use the 5.8 you need both motor mount towers and transmission. Also would be considerably lighter on the front, so the springs would be a bit too strong to keep the alignment right.

The 400 is a m motor, the 5.8 is a w. the bell housing etc is not the same. There was a 351 M, and a 351 Cleveland back when that truck was made, but the 94 motor is not from that family
even though both are small blocks they are both different, and are not interchangeable.
If I were to go with a torque motor to pull weight, it would be the 460.You will still need the 460 trans, driveshaft, etc.

D3TZ-6030-A Right & D3TZ-6031-A Left .. Brackets / Obsolete

The brackets bolt to the block, the rubber insulators bolt to the brackets, then to the engine supports.

D3TZ-6038-A .. Right/Left Rubber Insulators / Obsolete

Note: Passenger Car & Econoline 460 engine mounting parts will not work on F100/350.

A/T = Converter Housing // M/T = Bell Housing

The C6 converter housing is made as part of the transmission case.

There are some places that may have what you need. Maybe look at at LMCTruck and Dennis Carpenter. Landlproducts.com also has options for our trucks as well.

Google is your friend on this one. 460 was a factory option in half tons, and 3/4 and 1 tons during this body style. The parts are out there. I`ve done two 460 swaps, in 87-96 trucks. The engine accesory drive is the biggest hurdle. Either track down stock stuff or spend the money at L and L.

How often and how far are you pulling that 7300 lb camper? And how fast are you trying to go? A 400 with a cam, 4 barrel intake and a set of headers is a good pulling engine. Don`t forget the straight up timing chain.

All that being said, 7300 lbs behind a 78 half ton anything is too much. My 93 F-250 RC/LB with a 5.8, C6, and 4.10s was only rated for 7900. My 04 F-250 CC/SB with a 6.0 Powerstroke is rated for 10,300. Think about that. Oh and said 93 now has a 460 in it and doesn`t give two s**ts about dragging around our 27' 6000 lb 5th wheel.

That 6038 engine mount that Bill noted as obsolete was changed to a different part number, I will try and see where I mentioned it in my build thread...I came upon the interchange number by accident and bought a dozen of them.

primetime only going about 60mph i dont get into a rush pulling the trailer plan on doing 400 mile trip next yr with it but ive i had better pulling power out of a 350 Chevy motor than this 400 ford block msybe a good 750 holly carb on it is all it needs with a good set of headers and get rid of the 600 carb

Smog has the 400 whooped. You will need a better cam, I take, and carb. A 600 should be good, but it needs to breath.

I had a 400 in a 80 dually, pulled pretty strong. Nothing like the 460, but did ok

You can really wake that 400 up with the regular items, going to Aussie CC heads ia an option as well.
