Discussion about my vibration

I'll answer that as soon as it finishes doing my ZF swap for me ;) Should be done ANY minute now.

Are you actually considering a ZF swap Chris? What would be the benefits of going to a standard? sounds like alot of work... :p

It vibrates too smilietease

I didnt want to go there... first cockshuttles and now this? :suspicious:

I've been planning it for quite some time. I was going to do it this summer, and I had it all planned out, but the guy with the tranny + parts flaked near the end of the summer and I didn't have enough time to find another setup.

Can't do it during the school year cuz I'm only at my mom's (where all the tools are... namely, air tools) 2-3 days a week, and it's my only vehicle.

Standard transmission = more reliable and better for towing (our boat is freakin heavy). I also prefer having the control-- being able to control which gear I'm in and where my RPMs are. My previous truck was a stick and after going to auto I can't stand it. Not to mention that my truck gets intermittent vibration problems and I think some of them are related to my transmission.

Tranny doesn't slip nor shudder. Just vibrations that feel like they're coming from the drivetrain-- but I'm almost positive its not from the drivetrain. Long story that I don't care to type, lol.

That was one of them. That was my vibration from a stop-- VERY pronounced and extremely annoying, but only happened when starting from a stop.

I've also got some very slight vibrations at speed (and not just any specific speed). I first noticed them after getting stuck in the snow one night and wreaking havoc on my transmission. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure it out and I'm fairly certain it's in the trans, not sure though. Could be the crappy tires that I've got on my truck.

boy that sounds familiar, take your wheels off and check your wheel bearings!!!

i got that same vibration after doin some donuts in the snow and in and out of 4x4.. it either destroyed my bearing or was the final killer... im gunna guess youve already checked it.. check the fluid level in your rear differential as well

i actually was just talking to my dad.. he had a 1986 bronco, had a bad vibration, same thing as you chasing it for ever, tranny, u joints etc.. ended up being a rear wheel bearing, when u looked at it you wouldnt know the difference, but it was pitted just enogh to make a real bad vibration

Front wheel bearings are all new, Timken bearings, replaced by me.

Front and rear diff fluids have also been changed by me. Redline fluid.

I had a 96 F150 standard cab, 302 2wd that did exactly what you describe. It turned out to be some part in the tranny.

Completely disassembled my t-case (looking for the vibration). Pics to prove it:

As for the rear wheel bearings... I do know that the bearings in the rear diff are new, since I had the gears swapped to 4.10s and he did a rebuild kit with that. I dunno if the rebuild kit includes the wheel bearings but.... If it doesnt, I'm not sure if I'm willing to drain my diff and remove my axle shafts just to find bearings that are perfectly fine :headbang:

thats what im saying though.. my dad said the bearing didt look to bad, pitted just a little bit, put new bearings in and vibration was gone.. i cant find your thread again, but is there a noise with this as well? or just a vibration.. or is it a sound that resonates throught the whole truck? tough to diferentiate... if its more of a sound vibration, than is MAY be those bearings..

hey chris did you do anything to that transfer case by the way? like adjust the slack on the chain or something?

I'm not discounting that the bearings could be bad. But I'm saying that in case they ARE okay, then I'll have pulled the axle shafts and done all that work for nothing, and then I'd be frustrated.

And no it doesn't make any sound at all (that I've noticed).

Nope. Took it apart to check for problems. Checked to make sure the pump tube was still attached and the pump was attached at the bottom of the case, checked the plastic shift fork tabs, checked for any unusual wear marks, and buttoned her back up.

Why do you ask?

ok, sittin here chatting with my dad.. if you had the axels out, which you did and the inner bearings were changed and the outters were not, those outters could have moved just slightly.. one new bearing and one warn bearing..

ok i retract what i just said.. bearings make sound..

does it vibrate under acceleration? or cruising too?

well mine seems to have a bit extra play in the chain. just didn't know if it was adjustable or not. mine is a BW1345 though as opposed to your BW1356

It seems to vibrate pretty much all the time. The reason I think it's tranny related it because I often get a more-noticeable vibration at certain times between shifts-- for example, under normal acceleration, right before it shifts from 3rd to overdrive, there is a very slight but pronounced vibration. No one would probably ever notice it except for me.

I'm going to move all these off-topic posts into a vibration thread so we can talk about it more.

I'm not sure if the chain is adjustable... If it is, I can't imagine it's very easy. There's no way to adjust the distance between the sprockets so I think you're only route would be to dissemble the chain somehow and remove links.
