difference in engine timing

Turning down the riming?

There is advancing and retarding.

If this is a hi-miler the timing chain is stretched, the gears are worn, the vacuum advance diaphragm could be seized or broken.

To go from 10*R to 10*A is a miniscule amount in turning of the dizzy.

Try having resistance on the dizzy using the hold down bolt..then just lightly tap the VA one way or the other.

Spark from coil is a negative. Turned it on touched it to the power steering pump an to the engine block got nothing

You do need to crank a bit, as the coil only charges and fires as it is triggered. It is not a constant ready to fire situation.

i will try tomorrow the weather is getting crappy and cold. i will crank it over and try getting spark from the coil. if still none, what would i check next? the coil is only 6 or 7 months old. as well as all the other major elecxtric parts other than wires

The coil can be resistance tested to see if it is ok, it still has to be triggered by the ignition module, which gets a signal from the distributor. When you were tightening it down, by any chance did you bump a wiring connector?

no and i went through and checked all the connectors as well right after it stopped. there is one on the back of the intake that got a little water on it from the rain. could that be the issue?

Attach a wire from the + battery post to the coil + terminal.
If it starts don't run it any longer than 30 seconds.

If it starts then you have a wiring issue between the ignition switch and ignition components.

You can check spark at the coil by pulling the secondary wire out and rest it on top.
Blue spark good
Yellow spark bad.

Very weak spark usually....it should be blue/white

i know, but what usually causes weak spark out of nowhere? all connectors are fine, i don't see any bad wiring in the ignition system.

Possibly a bad coil....moisture from a crack, really hard to say. Did you try what Dennis said?

It starts with the key now but it runs for a second then blows back out of the carb and dies. The spark was orange and blue not just orange or blue. I smacked the coil a couple times with the screwdriver then moved the dizzy rotor and it sparked a little stronger did it again and no spark at all did it again and got the orange and blue spark an it started up
