Clutch gave out on the 88

Well, at least it made it most of the way through the winter, could have been bad if this happened earlier. BIL was driving it, not much warning, the clutch linings let go, no motion. Had to verify that it wasn't anything more, but the linings were laying int he inspection hole... So it looks like I get to take the trans down on it and deal with that, maybe then I can get the side fill plug loose... it is way stuck in there.

Sorry to hear about your Clutch. As you said about my Transfer case/ Trans junction... "It's only six bolts holding it on.". OK... It's a starter, linkages, interior flooring, front bolts holding down the seat, Pilot Bearing, Clutch, Ya gonna do the slave cylinder too? Might as well do all the seals while you have it out. Ain't it fun! I've put 110 miles on the new Pilot Bearing since Sunday with NO shifting problems at all.

I do sincerely thank you for your support and input. I'll say a prayer that you have no more surprises.

All the best, Joe

I do plan to change the slave, as they are prone to failure, so I don't want to have to go back in after it. The fill plug is rusted in enough that I can't get it out in the truck, so I'll probably work on that too, not keen on not being able to check the fluid level. I wanted to change the oil in it as the shift from 1st to 2nd when cold has been hard for some time. Mine is 4x as well, so I will be dropping the tcase off, just don't care to wrestle with it still hooked up.

it is hard to say how many miles are on this clutch, but it has been worked pretty hard over the last few years, since my sister was using it to haul hay while the trans was out on the Cummins. They didn't have the money to get a replacement, so it sat. plus the NV4500's that are hooked to them can be a trick to find sometimes. When you do, they often think they are made of gold.

The good news is that I picked up a LuK RepSet for $58, new in the box. It normally is a $200 set... I probably won't have a factory warranty, but I am confident it will be fine, the one I put in my diesel works great with less pedal effort.

GREAT DEAL on the NIB LUK set up! Good luck getting the plug out. Not knowing my levels would really bug me. Sounds like a job for PB Blaster, Elbow grease and a few good grunts. A beer or too wouln't hurt either.

I hope I can do a bit more with it out of the chassis, a bit snug getting at it right now. I have never really seen a steel plug stick in an aluminum case like this one has... Tried to warm the aluminum with a torch, but it is too tight and was afraid of doing more damage than good...

I have always found it interesting that they do put dis-similar metals together. On Aircraft it is a known problem and they try to (not always)avoid it? I hope it comes out OK, I wonder if teflon tape might be a good idea for when you to put it back in? I coated mine with a light touch of grease.

Anti-seize at a minimum... It depends on the application as to how much trouble it cases to put the two together. cast aluminum isn't as bad with iron as say stainless steel and iron. The bigger issue is the different corrosions from the elements...
