Arrgh! Another steering column broke.

As the title says, my steering column broke. The pot metal part that holds the shifter in place let go. That is a common weak point for these columns. This is my third one.

It probably doesn't happen to stock trucks as much, but with the c-6 tranny linkage being a little different than the stock tranny, I guess there is a little more stress on the column.

I decided to say screw it and go with a floor shifter. I bought a B&M unimatic. It's tall enough for trucks and is cable operated. The install went ok, except there wasn't enough room between the tranny and the floorboard for the part of the shifter that goes down through the floor. I shimmed it up a bit and it worked.

I'm not really sure I like having a floor shifter, but since I had to cut the floor to put it in, it's staying. I will put up some pics tomorrow.

Damn that sucks. Do you have to get a new one, or is it still useable?

It is still usable for everything except the shifter. I'm gonna keep it and just take the shift lever off.

Dude me too!! I didn't think a floor shifter would be feasible for these trucks since the seat is so high off the floor. Post pics soon, I wanna see :)

You'd be surprised, as long as the handle is long enough, it isn't bad.. running one on the 92 since it was a manual when it was a gasser... I got mine from a Tempo though.

The part that breaks in the 7212 and the 7R264 also you should replace the bushings.
