'93 f250

Hey guys,
New to forum but have read/learned a ton for a while using it, decided to join. I have a '93 f250 with EFI 351w and E40d auto trans. Trans is less than 7k miles, motor has 187k. I've decided to do a motor swap but want advice on where to go. This will be a slow project since I'm a young family man so tight budget. Mechanic buddy wants me to go with Jasper.
Experience with them? Also wonder about possibility of swapping to a 460?
Thanks and nice to join

If you want to put a 460 in the truck your going to have to change the trans out to. The bell housing are not the same. The 300 I6 ,302, and the 351 use one . and the 460 uses a diffrent one.

Stay with the 351. its a better engine. and can make more power if you know what your doing. And a 351 will live longer then a 460 as well.

The 460 is a good engine, dont get me wrong.
But by the time you spend the money to get a 460 wiring ,computer ,motor mounts, Trans. and all the other bits,
you could get the 351 out of your truck. make it a 408, get heads the right intake ,cam , and a tune, And have it make more power, live longer, and get better MPG then a 460.

Welcome to the site, you'll find it rather a useful site for information and ideas for your truck, I have a 6th generation truck myself and had just stumbled upon this site and it had lots of useful information, so I had joined it last August, and the information helped me with doing things on my truck.

You would for the money be better served even just doing a general rebuild, add a decent tow cam and better heads and go with that over switching to a 460. It of course depends what you want from the truck, but if you want the swap on a budget, you would be better off buying the truck it is in as well and save the trouble.

Thanks for the advice guys. Definatly decided to stay with the 351w for sure. Have some ideas for it. 58mm throttle body, better intake, headers, that kind of thing.

I use the truck for occasional towing, have a 8k lb camper we pull so eventually want to do it with this truck. I found a decent deal on a stage 1 351 complete except alternator etc. Should run me about 2500 plus shipping and install. Any suggestions about manufacturer other than Jasper I should look into? I've been to Summit and all the major ones but for any kind of long block its well over what I've found from Jasper and my mechanic buddy (not a shade tree guy-type guy!) he swears by them.

Also was wondering how big you guys think I can go on tires without huge lift and spacers etc. Just stock wheels and suspension. Have 265/75/16 now. Considering just a 2" lift, its 2wd. Never goes off road, just going for looks.

Just do your homework and research each remanufacturer. Ask questions. Look at warranty information for each engine. All are competent rebuilders.

where I got my short block from.. check out they're national long block or short block programs. no core charge. and you can call them and have a engine built to your specs.. aka gt40 heads a F4 roller cam/block.

Jasper bores all the Windsors .060 over no matter from what I've seen. cheapest pistons and bearings they can get, get tossed in.

Thanks for the advice. I actually found these guys online but could NOT find any good reviews for them. The prices for them are really good and no core means I could sell whats left of mine.

yeah.. I was amazed at how good the short block came to me.. already had the dowels for trans, timing cover, and heads. .030 overbore with real good pistons.

I'll find my pics and post em tomorrow..

Chris has got one of there engine and it was a good built engine. Little tighter then i like but a good engine it is.

As for the HP and TQ the hard part is the computer. All these trucks are SD computers and if you change the combo to the point that it pulls less then 17in of vacuum the computer not going to like you.

So you have to stay with a cam that have a center line at about 116 or more. or you could go with a center line of 113 avance 4 and get away with it.

if its got a 351 in it. and i didnt want to mess with the computer. I put a Mustang GT cam in it. Put a GT40 intake or a Trick flow intake on it with a 70 or 75 MM TB on it. And some Ford racing 303Z heads or some Trickflow Track heats 170CC heads.

And you be building a Gen 1 Lighting engine with upgrade. should make you about 290 to 310 HP and get you like 390TQ and be all down low in the RPMs.

Real good engine for not a ton of money. See if you can find a Ebay find 351 GT40 intake. cant use one from a 302. You will see a ton of 302 ones.
But the 351 intake was used on the lighting. and was sold by Ford Racing. I dont think there made anymore.

tell that to my what 13" of vacuum? lol...

and your computer is not to happy at all about what we did.

But no You had to put 1.72 rocker arms on a cam that was already going to be on the limit of the computer liking. when they should of been 1.60 arms.

Now Chris what do you have to do??? Oh right now you need a Mustang Mass air A9L computer to make it better. And thats not hard for you. You have a AOD trans.

Hes got a E4OD computer controlled Trans.
But as you and me know theres ways around that as well. But it would cost more for Jakehuntress to do that then it will for you Chris. about 700 to a gran more depending on how he went about it.

Thanks guys. Looks like they sell one with gt heads and flat pistons and RV cam/double timing. That with a bigger intake and throttle body with some decent headers and true duals may be all I go for. Not taking this one to the track just want a little unexpected power. Little lift and new paint and my 2 yr old will drive it to high school someday :)

Parts swap, brakes front to back, that stuff I'm solid but some of this is outta my league. How would I check the computer deal? Would stage 1 chip/programmer do me any good? Used to have one on my cummins but it was an '05 w a few mods...
