9" Disc break upgrade

TexasNomad

FTFS Designated DRINKER!
I tried searching for this but I was coming up with nothing..

I know there has to be a cheaper way to upgrade my 79 drums with disc breaks..
I found kits on line for 700 to 1k ouch..
Is there any model ford trucks or cars that I can just take the rear breaks off of and be a pretty easy swap and a whole lot cheaper??

Did your brake break? lol

On my truck I made my own conversion using 79 4x4 front brake parts.

I unbolted the caliper mount and made a notch in it so it would slide over the rear end housing. I then made a plate that would bolt it to the bearing retainer bolts. I ground the axle flange a little so the front rotor would fit over it. I did have to get longer wheel studs.

I took the piece off of a 4x4 front axle that holds the brake caliper. It has a round hole in it that the axle goes through. I took a notch out of it so it was kinda a u shaped hole and let it slide over the rear axle tube.

I the made a plate that allowed it to bolt to the axle housing.

Sorry I didn't explain very well.

With that kit, you don't need a welder. It bolts on, then you just need calipers and lines. About $60 more.

But it says you have to move your shock mounts?
"You will also need to move your shock mount inboard 3/4"
I wonder how much it would cost to have some body cut and re weld them....

Does doing this swap eliminate your emergency brake? Or did I miss something in the kit/Tony's swap?
