89 f150 i6 starting issue

About 5 mos ago, it started having a problem where it would start perfect when cold, but after warming up I would either have to let it sit for an hour and cool down or pop start it. When it is warm, it doesn't crank, just clicks like a dead battery, or sometimes turns over very slowly. I replaced the starter, battery, alt, all cables, solenoid and still couldn't fix it. I finally gave up and just started parking where I could pop it if needed. After a while, the starter ate a flat spot in the flywheel, so popping it was my only option. Luckily, soon after that, it made some bad noises and started blowing smoke everywhere while losing all power. Got it home and found some big cracks around the valves. Ordered a head and am now waiting on some parts to finish getting it together.

Now, I've tried searching with no luck. What could be my starter issue? I replaced everything I could think of. I can't test anything now as it's apart, but I would like to have it start when I get it back together. Thanks.

Timing, poor connections, too small cranking amp battery, wrong starter, bad starter (even though its new).

Also, consider the cables as a possible issue. But heat soak sounds likely as well, if the timing is set right and nothing else is amiss.

Timing was good, starter was tested, all cables were replaced with no change. Battery was tested, all connections were checked when replacing cables. Yes I have a header. Should also say that when it did this, even jumping it wouldn't help. Nothing but pop-start or letting it cool for an hour.

Headers have a tendency to radiate enough heat to cause seizing of the starter. Try fabricating a heat deflector or some sort of insulating blanket.
