I actually did an experiment in college for that. The claim is that the oil flows like the 5 weight in the cold, but like a 30 when at operating temp, which is typically around 200 degrees. (Industry standard) So I put the oil in the freezer overnight, packed it onto my cooler on ice, then we did the experiment by dropping plastic bb's in the oil and recording how long it took to travel the tube. We then would heat it to the next temp and repeat, all the way to 200 degrees. The results did show the 5w was less viscous than the 10W and 30W. (no brainer, huh?...;)) It was a validation, and we had to do the whole report and data crunching and theories behind it all.

Only reason I might be concerned is if towing heavy regularly, but heck, even diesels are going to lighter weight rated oils now... Once at operating temps, there really isn't much difference.

That is interesting, Roger. It's nice to see validation once in awhile. Thank you. The only towing I do with the truck is a very light popup once in awhile.

You live for winter, Duncan.

We're supposed to get 1-3 inches of fresh snow today. Happy May Day! I've been in Minnesota for 13 years and this is the first May that I've ever seen snow and the next couple days high temps in the mid-30s. (yesterday was 74).
