5W-30 in Gen 6 trucks?

Any thoughts on using 5W-30 in the Gen 6 trucks?

Has anybody tried this, or have any insight into reasons why or why not I should use 5W-30 in a 400 engine. The engine has about 30,000 on a stock rebuild, and uses no oil(other than a fuel pump gasket leak). OK, I lied - it uses a quart of oil between oil changes of 3000 miles.

I have used 10W-30 since the rebuild, but that is always the first oil to move off the shelves in the stores, and it is hard to find in this area. There is always lots of 5W-30, which I use on the 2006 "not-ford".

Oil changes are done at 3000 miles for three reasons: 1) Lots of short-distance driving- 2 miles or less, 2) Lots of dirt-road driving, and 3) It takes 6 months or more to do 3000 miles.

Don't think you would have any issues Doug...will flow better when cold as well.

Thanks for the replies. I do notice that the oil pressure is quite high when started on a cold morning.

That might drop a bit which isn't a bad thing.

I wouldn't worry about it Doug. I'm probably not the best person to take oil advice from, but my philosophy has always been if the parts are lubricated...doesn't really matter. There have been times I've run 1:1 ratios of ATF to 50w for 5-6,000 miles. I've said it before, I think the engine oil market has to be about one of the biggest rackets out there.

hmmm...winter :D

5W-30 wont hurt.. like duncan said it'll flow better when cold...

just a quick quiz, do yall know what the W stands for???? bet some of yall dont..

Weight. Not its physical weight though. The viscosity. For example, it flows as much as a 5 weight oil(thinner) when cold, and as it gets warmer, though the oil thins, the particles in it expand and it flows as much as a 30 weight oil(thicker)

Older oils didn't have two weights. You used to just buy say 30 weight oil. This got thinner as it warmed up and oil pressure actually went down.

Now adays we have high tech oil to keep oil pressures safe.
