Thanks for the info! I will be selling the motor (which has less than 100K miles on it) and keeping the transmission. Will the trans have a shift kit since it is out of a cop car? Can i change the governor in the Crown Vic trans?

theres no "shift kit" in a crown vic trans. you can change the governer out however, you can find a mustang governer which like 1987cp said is a little higher at around 4500 rpm or so, which is about all youll need for a truck. does your truck already have an aod trans? edit: i see in your sig youve got an aod trans in your truck, should be all good then. i dont know if the governer in the truck trans is different than the crown vic one, that would be something worth finding out.

Okay, i will see if i can find a mustang governor out of a junkyard this summer.

All this talk about 5.0 motors from other vehicles should be demonstrating a couple things here.
1: The basic motor is the same regardless what vehicle it was installed in. Same block, same heads except for the CV and Explorer motors, same crank, same rods, and same compression ratio.
2: You can get the same performance from any of them.

So that means if you have a solid 5.0 right now.. doesn't burn oil and has good compression, there's really no need to swap in another 5.0 to get added performance. All you got to do is add a few high performance parts and the the results would be the same. The motor itself really only needs a better cam, and it doesn't even have to be a roller cam, a flat tappet cam will do and do it cheaper too. Then add longtubes and a full exhaust system, and put mass air on the truck. The tranny needs a shift kit and these guys http://www.ford-aod.com/ sell a 5000rpm governor for it. That's it.. when it's all done you'll actually have lots more power than the Stang came with.. and no engine hoist necessary.

Not necessary.. the E5TE heads on the '85 truck motor are all but identical to the E7's.
