302 Tq

'biteme'

lol.jk.But yea i'm sure it'll make your truck perform alot better.
LOL! I sure hope so, the 302 i have in the truck now performs well, but im looking for that high power that will put you back in your seat. And i hope i will get that with my P.I. motor.smiliepeelout
True that. 300 ftw.

Congrats on the new motor, I always liked those PI engines just because you dont see alot of them and they are built really well.

Thanks! What was done to the P.I. motors for them to be built well?

More quality was put into them because of their intended use.

If your lookin for more power, than a 351 swap might not be a bad idea... Bolts in the same as the 302...
With some performance mods... You will be very pleased...

The 351W is the hands-down best all-around motor available for our trucks. I'd suggest that swap too. Makes the straight 6 look like child's play and has all of the 302's benefits and then some.

Gearing is the key to get performance from the 302 in a truck, 4.10's is where you start and go up from there with larger tires. The published output numbers for the factory motors were "as installed" with full exhaust and accessories. Any 5.0HO will produce about 275hp at the crank with a decent exhaust and some free breathing accessories on the stock EFI intake or a carb setup. Put some GT40 heads and intake on it and upgrade the cam and it'll easily make 325-350hp. The 5.0 is really well built from the factory and the HO motors got forged pistons on top of that so they are blower and nitros safe too. It's not uncommon to find 450HP blown 5.0's with an all factory bottom end.

ah but once you get above that with newer castings pushing 500hp is reeeeally pushing it...tends to break the block.Cody, meet Paul.Paul is a friggin genius with smallblocks and camshafts.Paul how's your truck comin?

I could change the gearing, but it is my daily driver and i drive alot of highway. So i would like to keep my current gears for the gas mileage. I am looking for a cam but i dont know what one to get yet. I want to get one with alot of low end tq.

Yep, i've met Paul on the "other site". He is a genius with this stuff.

no, no, no, no and no. the 302 that comes from the police car crown victorias is not an HO, its what is referred to as a lopo. it has something like 160-170hp and about 270 ft lbs. it has e6te heads, not e7te heads. its NOT an ho motor. police cars either came with the low output 302 i mentioned or a 351 with the variable venturi carburetor, since the 351s in those cars never got efi.

I dont really believe that. The 302 P.I. will have the same amount of hp as a Mustang...maybe more.

NO, it doesnt, the intake, heads, cam, pistons is all different. the only common part between the two is the engine block, since mustang HO engines had forged pistons, however, if you dont believe me, why dont you ask on some crown victoria websites, crownvic.net and grandmarq.net will both laugh at you if you seriously think a crown vic came with an ho engine. however, believe whatever you want, im trying to help you, but you obviously dont understand.

being a P.I didnt mean crap back then, other than you could have gotten it with a carbed 351, and it had better suspension and handling. even the new police interceptors dont have the hp the mustangs do.

do some damn research.

Oh, well maybe you are right, and maybe not. by the way, im getting a 302 from a 1987, 1988, or 1989 instead of the 1985 one.

I am doing research right now...

just stating what i know. i myself have a 90 crown victoria with the terd lopo 302. ALL crown victorias came with that crappy 302 just fyi. the other option for the crown vic's was the 180hp 351 with a vv carb. if you want an ho motor, find a mustang from the same era, because no crown victorias came with an ho motor, so id stay away from those if i was you. another good option is a 302 out of a late 90s ford explorer, which has the gt40 heads. i dont want you to end up going through with pulling an engine out of a crown vic and then wondering why your truck is so gutless.

Well, i didn't mean to offend you in my post, i just cant believe that it will have that much HP!

I will look for a HO out of a late 80's Stang this summer.

Man, this is what I hate about when people start discussing late-model Windsor motors. Yep, Mustang and Vic SEFI 302s were exactly the same .... that is, except for the cast pistons, tiny cam, high-swirl heads, small upper intake, 50mm throttle body, 14 lb/hr injectors, nasty iron exhaust manifolds, 2" exhaust .... :D Though to be fair, there's a LOT less info about Crown Vic motors from the usual sources, if only because historically a lot more people have been modding Mustangs and couldn't care less what came in a Crown Vic.

The highest horsepower engine factory installed in a box Crown Victoria, regardless of option package, was the 351 "HO" at 180hp. The 302 offerings were rated at 130hp from '79 to '85 (the flat-tappet years) and 150hp from '86 to '91 (SEFI/roller cam) with the usual 2" single exhaust (165hp for '86-'91 with dual exhaust). HP peak occurred at less than 4000rpm (3700?), versus more like 4500rpm for Mustangs, which worked well with the 4000rpm transmission governor (versus 5000rpm for Mustangs). Quite a few police/fleet cars did get the 5.0 SEFI when the extra power of the 351 wasn't required; these engines were exactly the same internally as the civilian offerings.

Random factoid: Early SEFI Thunderbirds and Cougars, and very early SEFI Mark VIIs, also came with the same 150hp boringness as the Vics.

Sooo ..... if your new Vic 5.0 is stock, regardless of what exact sub-model it came from, it's a great source for a roller block, and that's about it unless you like going slow. If you want actual horsepower you'll be retaining the block, crank, rods, lifters and retainers, and lower intake manifold (if staying injected) and honestly not much else.

BTW, the hot ticket for factory 5.0s is out of '96-'99 V8 Explorers. Slightly narrower cam than Mustangs (256/266 versus 276/266) plus better heads and intakes makes it a great motor for heavy cars. Add decent exhaust and swap to EEC/TFI-IV (5.0 Mustang style) engine management and it'll be lots of fun out of the box. If you've seen the autocrossing Country Squire on YouTube (user name FamilyTruckster), he has exactly this setup underhood with nothing but a cam swap.

Thanks for the info! I will be selling the motor (which has less than 100K miles on it) and keeping the transmission. Will the trans have a shift kit since it is out of a cop car? Can i change the governor in the Crown Vic trans?
