x2 on the 390.....what a romper!
If you do have to re ring it use cast piston rings and nothin else. Most machine shops will reccomend moly but they wont seal up and itll burn alot of oil unless it has a near perfect power hone done on the cylinders. Id also check the stroke on the motor your gettin to make sure its really a 390. Just put somethin down a spark plug hole thats long enough it wont get stuck in the cylinder and turn the motor over by hand until it gets to top dead center then mark your dowel or whatever ya used and then turn the motor over till it gets to bottom dead center and mark your dowel. If its 3.5 inches its a 352 or 360, if its 3 and 3/4 its a 390 or 406, if its a hair under 4 inches its a 428 or 410. All these motors use the same block and heads so theres no way to tell em apart from the outside.
On sale day, 352/360 engines magically become 390's.I found a 390 for 200 bucks or the guy wants me to put the 302(missing intake) in trade for it. He wants the 302 for a mustang. The 390 runs he said someone stole trany out of his truck. Whats the story with the 360/390 burning oil all the time from what I heard.
