That is a wide open question... That all depends on what you want the truck for/to do. Do you want maximum towing capacity? Do you want to tow but get decent fuel efficiency? Diesel, gas? What all creature comforts do you want/need? There is no way one of us can tell you what would be best until you can answer questions like that. What I think would be the best truck will be based on what I think is important, but you might have different criteria than I do, and actually, that would be very likely. I am typically happy with a Custom or XL, but you might want the XLT Lariat for all the bells and whistles that I don't particular care if it has.
If you are thinking along the lines of like collectible cars, what options are desirable and maintain value, then you are going about it all wrong, as these trucks really don't hit that market at all. Trucks are typically more sought out to do the job they were built for, as there is so many of them, the collector value just isn't there.
Im sorry I should have known better then to ask such an opened ended question. I want a rugged weekend warrior. I live in Hawaii and all the best beaches are the ones rental cars can't get too. No bells or whistles needed or wanted. Simple and reliable is best. Don't plan on doing any towing unless my lil sentra breaks down and I need to tow it home. As far as loads go maybe gravel or dirt once in a while as I fix up my house. Basically I just want something that can handle moderate off roading with easy and still be useful as I remodel my home.
Sounds like a basic F150 would be a good fit for you. Really not a lot of downsides to any of it, since you aren't having to worry about long distances so much. Even a simple 300 6 cylinder would do well for you. An F350 would be quite the overkill really. An F250 would suffice as well, unless you are set on having a solid axle.
yup gonna mirror what Felro said, probably just see what you can find out there in your price range, year range, and find something in good shape, or what ever you can work with. Sounds like the XL trim level would work best for you, but that is really the least of your worries, XL usually being a work truck package meaning roll up windows and rubber flooring, which I love. My '93 is an XLT, and I do like having power windows in a full size, keep an eye on Craigslist...
I've all ready have my eye on a 94 350 single cab with a 351 motor. But not sure what trim lvl it is. The reason I ask is, i hate buying something then finding out there is a better model Then what I have. Such as solid dana 60 front axle. If I got a regular f150 and decided I wanted to turn it into a mud monster later then id be kicking myself for not just buying a f350 to begin with. Besides I like overkill and bigger is better hahahha.
Trim doesn't determine the mechanicals, only the extras like power windows and fancy interior. Being a 350, it should have the solid axle, while the 150 and 250 will be IFS. Custom is the bare bones, XL is a little nicer, but still more basic, XLT is decked out a bit more, then XLT Lariat is the high end. For example, the 92 is a Custom. No cruise, manual windows, no a/c, rubber floor mats, vinyl seats, no exterior body trim. My XL has cruise and a/c, cloth seats, a fairly nice interior, manual windows, some exterior body trim. My old man's XLT has the cruise, a/c, power windows, wood grain dash, carpeted floors, full exterior trim. The XLT Lariat I have as a parts truck has all the toys, fancy seat, high end sound system, full body trim.. Too bad it was extremely abused...
