all i know is that a engine thats ment to have a turbo will run horribly if it aint working. a case in point, 1976 oliver diesel 1855. turbo quit on it, dropped a entire gear range just to pull a disc. was blowing the black smoke and using way too much fuel. it dawned on me what was wrong when i pulled back on the throttle and didnt hear the "winding-down" noise you get with a turbo. was $1,000 for a rebuilt turbo. the non-turbo 1650 we have might not have the power of the 1855 but will pull all day long on less fuel, can operate at a lower rpm under load with out having to keep a close eye on the tach. ive never ran any vehicle application with a turbo. i like that "sound" but dont know if its really worth the cost when they need service.
