From my understanding, it's running twin VW VR6 engines, originally they had a podunk I-4

The VR6 is a narrow angle inline. The W-12 is 2 VR6's that share a crank. When you look at a cross section, it looks like a "W" (as opposed to a "V-8."

Motor's in some Audi's and the Bentley, as I recall. Very compact powerplant.
