Found this on another site I'm part of. The guy was on the job, and some jacktard swung in. As I'm told, the conversation went something like this:

Chevy Owner: I want that log

CAT operator: Can your truck and trailer.....

Chevy Owner: Of course it can handle it.

CAT operator: Ok, well it's alot of weight.

Chevy Owner: Listen man, this ain't a compact pick up. This is a made in America Chevy 1500 4x4.

I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking:

That is definitely quite the log

Looks alright from this angle

Hmmm...might be exceeding the tongue weight max:

Oh dear God...well at least he has a half ton chevy 4x4:

I bet there's not a hard core wheeler here, that's ever experienced flex like this, frame flex that is:

I guess with all the money he saves on his heating bill next winter, he'll be able to fix his truck...hahaha. It's instances like this, that makes me worry for Matt's well being.

If they'd put it back over the trailer axle like they should have, it wouldn't be so bad. Dunno what the trailer'd do...but the truck would survive better. And trailers are usually cheaper than pickups.

Call it an average diameter of 3.5' and 10' long...assume a unit weight of 50 pcf, and the log weighs about 2.5 tons. Heavy, but a half-ton Chevy should be able to haul 5000 lbs on a flatbed trailer.

It might be a little closer to 4' average diameter, which pushes it up a bit over 3 ton. 50 pcf, from a Google search, is a reasonable conservative number for oak/maple.

Yeah Ian...you're right...log placement coulda helped alot...just thought the story was funny, and the result was even funnier. If they coulda moved it 2' further back...there woulda been no problem. But seeing as they were using a fork lift...the tire guards woulda forced them to drop that log a foot...haha.

Tire guards?? You mean fenders? :rolling laugh:

They'd have been in the way...but I think a competent operator could load that log onto that trailer without too much trouble.

HAHAHAHAAH...yeah fenders...and yes I was stumped (pun intended), and couldn't think of the name when I was typing that.

And again...you're right, but from the sounds of it, they just wanted to get the guy outta there...and with the guy's attitude they really didn't care what the end result was.

Your mod status should be revoked for that. BTW...that's one of the perks of reading the email notifications prior to seeing the actualy post.

Why, does the text show up in the email? Darn. Ruined the fun of it :rofl2:

It's true though. I wouldn't trust that GMC suspension to a load like that. That's why I'm not getting rid of the Ford.

Yeah everything that is typed shows up in the email notification in one uniform size and color.

So which is it? You would or wouldn't trust the GMC? Same question for the Ford.

Yeah, he used to be pure as the driven snow,......till he drifted...

Three Stooges nyuck nyuck nyuck

I don't think I'd trut the GMC with that. I'd go for it if I had the Ford though. I think it could take it no problem. ~6,000 lbs? No prob.

My truck towed a 1963 Thunderbird on a car trailer from Sacramento to Davis in 1999. Scary as hell, but it did it. :p

rambler

New Shoes......
the loader didn't position this correctly on the trailer, too much tounge weight, the trailer looks like it could have handled the load if properly postioned over the axles like it should have, not sure if the truck could have pulled it.. but dang.. sure did bend that frame!

Besides... Mine's a 3/4 ton - a 2500. I'd move that log no problem. (With my Ford - wouldn't try it with the 'burb by a long shot!!!)

Lets see he was looking for a 454 for the gay mans chevy,he moved from NC cause the Carolina women were too much for him. It didn't take much to convert him from Ford the word Free was said. And Yes Matt would try to carry that log inside his Chebbie.

I've hauled more than 6,000 pounds with my old 1/2 ton Chevy trucks with no problems. The '88 to '98 trucks seem to have a stronger frame than the newer trucks, though. Anyone ever see the pics of when a shop lifted a Chevy on the car lift thing and it bent the frame?
