Two or three?

Recently acquired a Bronco as junk, was told that it had a motor rebuild but has been sitting for several years.I would to use this engine in a project so I pulled the intake and heads, everything looks real good. this engine has a two barrel carb and solid lifters. Is that the way all of the V6 engines in that year Bronco came? now have engine sitting on a stand as would like to hear it run before I get into my project. Is it absolutely necessary to get new head bolts? Also on the intake where the water comes out to the radiator there is a smaller hose going down to the lower water intake hose, what does that hose do? is it necessary? Thanks Any help is appreciated and any thing else
you can suggest will be helpful.

You have a 2.8 if you have a carb on it unless it was changed. I think the bolts can be reused on that engine but I will check later getting ready t to leave. The extra house is for the thermostat out its on the lower part of the engine a poor setup at best.

Thanks Smokey, the heads are cast iron, I know if they are aluminum at least on an escort 1.9 the head bolts stretch, I know as I have an 87 Escort
in a trike.

Remember, on the coolant flow with the 2.8 its reverse flow (the thermostat is in the lower radiator hose). To fill it, take the top hose loose from the radiator, fill to capacity, then fill the radiator. If you dont, air bubbles form in the coolant system, and it will cook down before the thermostat will open.
