Hello Guys, well the big days is here. fired up my 79 f250,{460-c-6} for the first time it was music to my ears, had no leaks of any kind so i thought i was on my way....lol.prolblem is after filling the rebuilt trans that i had done by a transmission shop, she wont move. i have no gears at all.there are no noises coming from the trans or the transfer case however when i shift the trans.from drive or reverse to park it makes a noise. i can shift into all ranges of the transfer case while running & nothing.& no noises. shut down the truck had a friend under it,i shifted into all ranges of the transfer case & my friend said it was engaging both driveshafts and doing what it should.i restarted the truck & rechecked my fluid level,it was full.run her through the gears again still nothing.i cracked open my cooling lines at the radiator while the truck was running to see what kind of pressure it had.while i did get fluid my bud & i felt the pressure was not what it should be.in the past ive seen fluid really shootout when doing this proceedure on other vehicles.the cooling lines are new & not restricted.im frazzeled & very frustrated as you can imagine.when i picked up the trans after the rebuild, the guys at the shop told me it would be bullet proof.....im about to test that theory out with my shotgun... any ideas? there was no motor or trans in the truck when i got it & i dont know its prior history other than its previous owner stuck many dollars in it & then had to sacrifice it. as always i appreciate your responses thanks Bob

adapter sleeve

someone told me that there is a adaptor sleeve on the back of the C-6 to mate it correctly with the transfer case.i believe this would be my issue for i did not recieve one with the truck.to check this i raised the rear of the truck off the ground & put the trans in park, in short my driveshaft still turns which tells me im not engaged into the case.duh...lol.park did work before i stuck the trans in the vehicle i remember checking it.now where do i get one of these adapters? can someone shed some light on this.thanks

blacksnapon, the transfer case is in gear & driveshaft still turns.i tried all positions w/the trans in park. when i run the truck & shift the transmission into gear its like im getting no power to the case is the best way i can describe it.now with the truck off we shifted transfer case into all gears & both driveshafts did turn,to check the case operation. thanks Bob

With trans in park and transfer in gear, the driveshafts should not turn. Still think the transfer is in neutral. Might say its in gear, but it's not.

let me explain better, trans in park, tranfer case in gear, truck on the ground driveshafts wont turn.raise the rear tires off the ground the trans is still in park & the shafts turn.{front axle is in free mode} transfer case definitly is in gear.in park the rear shaft should lockup.im thinking the splines from the rear of the transmission to where it meets the case are not lined up or incorrect size. the rebuilt trans is not from the truck.sorry for the confusion

When you put the case up, did the output shaft of the trans hold the t-case centered? If not, it may have an issue with the output shaft, as it should spline on and in essence hold the case up enough for you to line up the bolts. If you had to align the bolts and case at the same time, the output shaft did not spline up.

Fellro...Bingo you hit the nail on the head bud.i believe the trans shop put the wrong tail spline shaft in my transmission.now since this was a carry in job there must have been some confusion on their end & i believe there was.they had it for almost a month, i gave them year make model serial # what the truck had in it & what i was going to put in it.since there was no motor or trans when i got the truck.i gave them what was in the bed & even told them it was not the original.now if they were not sure they should have called me & i could have taken a measurement of the transfer case spline.they charged me a grand man! & i did the installation .I also found out today that ford used several different size tail shaft splines for the C-6.not my fault if they didnt do their homework & im not doing it a second time, gettin to old for this sh..im no transmission guy by no means. although ive changed out & serviced many over the years.i leave the trans rebuilding to the guys who do it.i got a warranty & they gotta make it right! Thanks Fellro i gotta go cool off now lol. :hammer:

Heres an update from the trans shop, they pulled the transfer case & found the tail shaft to be 3" to short from going into the transfer case. they are "doing more research"trying to come up with a fix.im assuming they put the wrong tailshaft in the trans. any suggestions? Bob

I don't really see how that can happen, especially if they have half a clue what they are doing, and pay attention just a little...

Well, since they had to pull it down, they saw it for themselves. Had you pulled it and taken it back, they may have tried to deny it. I may be wrong, as I haven't done a lot of trans swapping on Fords, but isn't the 4wd version the shortest, or is there always an adapter to hook up the t-case? If so, they must have somehow used a short tail shaft unit, which can be somewhat hard to find... Used in the divorced case setups and some 2wd 3/4 ton applications.

Had a simular issue when I had a spare C6 rebuilt. When I pulled the original, the tail shaft and adaptor were shorter than the one I had rebuilt. It sounds like you have the short tail shaft and long adaptor (rear part of the case). Both C6's had been behind 351M/400's 4X4's. Not sure why Ford had 2 different tail shafts but it was obvious when I had them side by side. Took both to the trans shop, claimed stupidity, and he hooked me up by putting the short shaft in the rebuilt tranny for free (required a full tear down). In your case I think since the drive shafts fit, you have the correct adaptor and the wrong tail shaft.
