Transmission fluid and filter change check.

We're getting ready to change the fluids and the filter and I've decided to add that additional inline filter to help with protection.

I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything or if there's anything special that needs to be done outside of the norm so to speak.

It looks like it would be easier to get to the pan by removing that cross member; is that what you fellas normally do?

Anything else I should do or be concerned about? Or just go ahead and change the fluids and filer?

Thanks,

I did not pull the crossmember. I unbolted the trans mount from the crossmember and jacked the T-case up which in turn jacked up the trans as far as it would go. There is 1 bolt that will be a royal pain. I used a 1/2" swivel socket on a long extension to get it out.

I'm going with the JX158, had a chat with their online tech support at Summit Racing:

Scott, is that easier than pulling the cross member?

Now I'm not so sure....Rockauto says (for the yr/make/model of my rig) that I need the JX150 or JX151 which is 5/16 and has double barbs versus the 3/8 flanged.

So, best thing to do is go out and measure and make sure I get the right one.....my guess would be that Rockauto.com is correct.

Do you fellas know off hand what the transmission lines to the cooler are?

Oh hell yeah! It will be a pain but it is far easier than pulling the crossmember.

My pan came out without raising the transmission on my 76' F250. Took a little finessing, but I got it out without scratching it up. :) I'd unbolt the mount next time.

Derek.

While your discussing the Danny fluid stuff. How much do the 4wd auto c6 hold? I can't remember

Don't remember for sure, but most of the fluid is in the converter, and you can't drain it.

Minus the converter, I think it takes 6 quarts maybe? Not for sure on that though.

I know th engine is suppose to take 6 I remember something about 11 liters but not sure what that's for. I bought a filter and stuff so not sure how much fluid to put in it

If you are able to drain the converter you'll end up needing approx 14 liters.

Derek.

3+ gallons?

No, you should be fine with 6 quarts. I think.

The fluid in the torque converter won't drain out when you drop the pan. It accounts for about half the capacity of the transmission.

6 quarts for a filter change, 11 quarts total with converter. Most torque converters have a 1/8" drain plug in them.

I pulled my transmission during the engine rebuild to wash it and replace input/output shaft seals, and service the bottom end. I did a very good job of draining the transmission on the stand, and my converter did indeed have a drain plug. I used all the fluid the dealership had left, 13 Liters. I added a 10"x14" cooler, so that right there added a little more fluid capacity. I believe I was a bit short at 13. I guess you won't be able to drain yours as thoroughly as I did, though.

Have fun!
