Trans help

I was wondering if any one would be able to give me a rough estimate on how long its going to take to pull my automatic trans out of my 1977 ford 4wd f100. Also the trans needs the front seal on the shaft where the torque converter sits on do i need to pull the trans apart to replace this seal or should it slide in from the front?!:headbang:

That is more determined by your skill and knowledge. I could likely have it out if things go well inside of 3 hours, but a newbie might take all day.

Depends how rusty things are too as to why I said so long... I have never really timed it to know for sure.

Rust is a pain. We have major salt induced rust here. The worst part it the cross member bolts on these trucks rust welding tight. The other bolts come out with ease. My friends and I have pulled and engine and transmission and transfer case on these trucks in under a hour. Yes we timed it.
We swapped a motor and transmission and back on the road in under 3 hours.
This was in the garage in the driveway it takes a little longer.

Thanks for all the feedback now the next question is does that seal slide in from the front of the trans or does it all have to come apart?

The seal is removed from the outside, you just pull the old one, and drive the new one on. Sounds easier than it is sometimes... I have often gotten a pipe with the approximate dimension of the outer ring of the seal, and use that to dive it on evenly.

ok im pulling the motor instead of dropping the trans and is there anything i should watch for while setting the seal? all this work for a $6 part!!!!

Just make sure it goes in straight, because if it gets cockeyed going in, you likely will damage it. Also, if you are going to pull the motor instead, I would do the pan gasket and main seals on it. Personally though, I would just pull the trans, typically easier to me.

thats whaat everyone was saying i just thought it would be easier i got it out in about two hours thats not to bad for a 16 year old by himself;P but all the seals and gaskets are new i pulled the motor not to long ago and did everything but thanks for the feedback!!!

Are you saying you could pull out the input shaft? Not that unusual on a C6.

The little one on the inside will slide out, but the other is supposed to be solid. Only thing I remember being in there is the input, which splines into the stator of the converter, and the pipe collar that mates up to the pump gear. That is supposed to be welded to the converter.
