To those that have an A/T and 4.0L

I need to hear from you regarding RPM's per speed.

With my OD actuated I am running 2200 rpm at 60 MPH

I feel this is high and would expect the rpm to be around 1800 while at a speed of 60 MPH.

I have 16" rims with P245 78-16" tires

Running with OD on - 60mph @ 2700; 70 mph @ 3100

But my tranny is about to give, so my numbers are useless.

IMO, That's way too high for Highway speeds.

No wonder people complain about fuel mileage on these things.

Well...my 4.0 has a 5-gear behind it (and 3.73s- and it's not in an Explorer), but it turns somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 rpm at 60.

The key point thus far not touched upon here is gearing. Mom had a '94 Explorer, 4.0 and the A4LD auto trans, that had a 3.08 rear-end in it. Nice low RPMs cruising on flat ground, and pretty good highway mileage (24 at interstate speeds, if memory serves), but it would unlock the torque converter to climb an anthill.
