Three Groove Fan / Water Pump Pulley?

OK, this is my first post and I am looking for a little help. But, rest assured that I'll return the favor.

I'm looking for a pulley with 3 grooves (sheaves) like the one used on my '73 F100 with a 360 engine. I can't seem to find a part number stamped on that pulley.

This pulley might have been used on other trucks as well as Mustangs, Cougars, etc.

I think the part number from '73 is D3TZ-8509-C. However, the far right column of the parts book shows D3TE-EA. I'm a little short on parts book smarts so I'm not sure if that equals D3TE-8509-EA which is a number I have seen a couple of other times. Rear Counter shows that DC has one D3TZ-8509-C NOS pulley but DC says no.

If you can add to what little info I have, I would appreciate it.

I am planning to try a little experiment on my '68 F100 and might need this pulley in case I run into clearance problems. If you have one or know where I can find one, please let me know. Just looking for a usable pulley - I can blast it and paint if it needs it.

Thanks,

Bill

Oh man, its been forever since I've seen one of those. Back in the 60's and 70's you were tripping over them.

I would think any thing with a FE and power steering and A/C would have that pulley.

Or any FE truck like a F600 or up that had a FE and air brakes would have it.

Do know if the spacing would be the same.

Put i do know that a Mustang that had a FE with A/C and Power steering has them. Or in 68 when the smog pump went on the FE engine cars.

How about aftermaket??

Good luck.

Thanks for the Mustangtek site. Good info there.

Maybe the C7OE-8509-B / C7AZ-8509-E shown there would work. The diameter is a bit smaller based on the photo but no info on the depth. The groove "wall" thicknesses seem to match. The "wall" between the rear and middle grooves is thicker than the others and that matches.

The medium duty pulleys are completely different. The FT motors share very little in that regard, they have the same bell housing and general dims, and that is about where it ends. The water pump is absolutely different.

Which pulley exactly are you looking for? Water pump or crankshaft? Water pump shouldn't be bad, crank can be a little harder as the balancer is unique to FE's, can't say if it is common with other pulley mounting.

I don't know if this will help any, but my 400 with dealer a/c has an aftermarket
pulley that has an extension that allows it to mount to the bolts inside the cank pulley.
Making it the 3rd .

I dont think the 351M and 400M Was the same in any way to the rest of the Ford engine. IDK about the pulley offsets though.

You never could know on the older truck. some time everything was the same and some times nothing was the same. when it came to the Accessories drives for the engines of the older trucks.

The newer trucks like the gen 9 truck everthing was the same. I don't know how many times ive toke a G3 alt from a 95 Mustang GT and put it on a 92 Truck or on a fox body car that had the junky G2 on it.

To clarify - It is the fan or water pump pulley I need. Not the crank pulley. The generic part number is 8509.

The pulley is about 6.5 inches in diameter, about 2.5 inches deep and mounts with 4 bolts. The "wall" between the rear groove and the middle groove is thicker than the other 3 "walls" if that helps. And, there is a bit of a gap between the front groove and the middle groove "walls".

Thanks Holtz.

I tried sending you an email and PM but my post count is too low for that.

Thanks for checking on the pulley and posting the photos.

The "browner" of the 2 pulleys seems to be the best fit. I think it is the one on top in the last photo and the one with the larger diameter.

Curious to know if you can see a part number on it.

Also, what would it take for you to sell/ship it to me?

Thanks,

Bill

Guys - Got a free ride to Montgomery today (about 80 miles) and made a deal to be dropped off at the Pull-A-Part there. I was running out of time when I saw a brown '73 F100. Turns out it had been there longer than any other '67 and later truck listed.

As I walked up to it, I could see it was air conditioned although the compressor was missing. Near the master cylinder was the adjustable idler pulley and its bracket. UNDER the truck on the ground was the fixed idler pulley. The radiator had been removed so it wasn't too hard to get the 4 bolts out of the fan, the fan spacer and the 3 groove water pump pulley. Getting the bolt that holds the tubular compressor brace out of the driver's side exhaust manifold was a different matter. No cheater bars available and I only had a 3/8" ratchet. The 3/4 combo wrench wouldn't budge it but using socket extension for clearance and the box end of the 3/4 wrench hooked on to the end of the ratchet handle provided more leverage and did the trick. I was just about to give up and leave it there.

My ride had to wait a few minutes while I got that bolt out but we still made it back home at 5:00.

All in all, a good day even though it was windy (15 to 40 MPH) and mid 40s. Turns out the weather was perfect for parts hunting. Not even a single drop of sweat! I was skeptical about the weather but any day I don't have sweat running down into my eyes is a good day!

Plus, why do you think I want these parts if not for air conditioning? I could use mid 40's at 30 MPH coming out of the dash vents . . . Well, for a while.

My thanks and apologies to Holtz who dug through his parts and took photos of the pulleys he had in an effort to help me out. It won't be forgotten and, hopefully, will be returned in kind.

I'm looking for a pulley with 3 grooves (sheaves) like the one used on my '73 F100 with a 360 engine. I can't seem to find a part number stamped on that pulley.

The Ford part number: '73/76 is D3TZ-8509-C stamped with ID engineering number: D3TE-EA

D3TZ-8509-C .. Triple Sheave Water Pump Pulley-6 5/8" O.D. / Obsolete

1973 F100/350 360/390 with A/C from serial number R20,001 / 1974 F100/350 360/390 with A/C / 1975/76 F100/350 360/390 with A/C except CA

A/C refers to factory installed integral air that is combined with the heater. The A/C controls are located in the same panel as the heater controls.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 1 = 800-476-9653.

HAVEN FORD in Haven KS has 1 = 620-465-2252.

BOWMAN SALES & SERVICE in Bowman ND has 1 = 701-523-3257.

Thanks Bill (BKW) - I am honored that you responded to my post.

I only wish I knew a fraction of what you know about Ford parts and had access to the data that you use and understood how to use it adequately!

When I look at a parts book, I tend to go into mumble mode even though I am getting better. I FINALLY figured out that a D3TZ-8590-whatever should be in Section 80 - somewhere. Never did figure out why it's not in Section 85 when a D8OZ-8678-A is in Section 86.

I really need 67 to 72 and 73 to 79 parts books in a SEARCHABLE PDF format. The only one I have is the 73 to 79 parts book in a PDF file but it is not searchable.

Thanks for the time and effort that you put into helping all of us.
