Thinking of doing a 460 swap

37

Hi all this is my first thread here and already have some questions........

I currently have a 79 F250 4x4 Camper Special with a 400 in it I have already rebuilt it once and it now has well over 350k miles on it. With that said I am considering swaping in a 460 as they are more readily available plus I love more ci's.

My questions are:

Do I need a new C6 bell housing?

Will buying stock 460 Mounts be a direct fit into the frame or will fabrication be required?

Is the engine longer requireing a different mount for transmission then a shorter/longer Drive shaft?

And one odd sidenote question what is the required Offset and Back spacing on the 79 F250 4x4?

Thanks all

My questions are:

Do I need a new C6 bell housing? I dont believe so. i think they both have the same bellhousing

Will buying stock 460 Mounts be a direct fit into the frame or will fabrication be required? They will be a direct fit. no fabrication needed.

Is the engine longer requireing a different mount for transmission then a shorter/longer Drive shaft? im pretty sure the tranny mount will be the same and the driveshaft i believe will stay the same.

And one odd sidenote question what is the required Offset and Back spacing on the 79 F250 4x4? And IDK.

Thanks all

ok im gonna try to answer your ?'s. but take it with a grain of salt as im not experienced on these trucks. answers are in the quote in Red...

should be almost a direct bolt in swap.
I know the bell housings are the same, i think you will need different motor mounts, not sure on the drive line and trans position questions, i believe they will be un-moved though...

No...351M/400 and 429/460 are the same bell housing

New ones...but personally, I like these:

Nope...but it will add 75-100 lbs fully dressed.

And one odd sidenote question what is the required Offset and Back spacing on the 79 F250 4x4?

Required for what? Stock or you looking not to rub for a set of tires?

At one time Yes...dunno if I'd drop the coin on that particular set, they look pretty rough. For a decent set of heads, you're gonna drop $1500...bottom of the barrel choice for me would be TrickFlow.

Sorry one last Question would a 429 be better? I have been out of the ford world for well over 10 years.....

Same engine...except for crank. The 460 stroke should be longer, producing more torque. So no, I wouldn't go 429.

429 is more of a revver than the 460, from what i understand.
Depends on where you want your power?
off the line or at 4k rpm's?
For the truck go 460...

Thats what I wanted to know thanks I need tq for towing and off road capaility.

I was looking for the offset and backspace because right now I have some 16.5" rims and tires are near impossible to find so I was going to go to 16's and needed to know the dimensions of the stock rim so that it will clear the calipers on the front. I have a pair of 8 lugs from a 2000 ford f350 and they do not clear the calipers so they are useless to me.....

Keep in mind you won't be able to use any stock rims after '96 because they are 8x170mm instead of the 8x6.5 you need. I can't remember off hand stock backspacing, but if I had to guess I'd say somewhere around 3.25". Can't you just pull a tire off and measure? as for tire availability...where are you looking and what kinda tire you want, cuz I have two trucks with 16.5" rims and don't have a problem finding tires.

I got that, but that's why I asked what kinda tire he wanted and in what size. Because any tire I want is usually available from 15-20" rims...and thats from a 33-54" tire. So I was just curious is all. If you're looking for something smaller than a 33" tire, or Wal-Mart specials or whatever your local tire shop has hanging on the wall, then yeah...probably difficult to find something with a 16.5" rim, but I still don't think it's that hard to find a tire with a 16.5" rim.

Well previously we were running 32's BFG ATs But in the future I will be going to 34" maybe bigger depends on how small i feel my penis is on that day(am i aloud to say penis? oh well "penis") As for right now I just need tires to get it back on the road and 16.5s are hard to find cheap and or used. thats all.....

Thanks for your input all very much appreciated.

HAHA...yes you're allowed to say 'penis'...as long as the word filter doesn't replace the letters with ****...then you're good. As for tires, find some 16x8 rims and call it good (but now are rims AND tires cheaper than just tires?). Like I said earlier, dunno stock BS, but I'd say somewhere between 3-3.5"

Sounds great! Well I have some cheap take off rims I have found on the net and was wondering what I needed to make sure they fit.

You got a pic of them? just curious...
