swapping rear gas tank

my new tank is coming in tomorrow and i'd like to install it.

when i unbolt the tank straps, i assume the tank will drop and i'll have to pull out an assembly of a pump and sending unit. is it a straight drop-in to the new one? am i going to need any special tools/new gaskets, etc?

can i drop the old one tonight and let it hang while i drive around town tomorrow, or will that cause issues. i'd basically have a dangling assembly. i don't know how it'd be any different than driving with an empty tank of gas?!?

You need the release tool for lines . Same as Filter and other quick connects .

Once you get 2 bolts on back of straps loose put floor jack and a something to spead then weight (I use old mini spare rim. ) remove bolts swing straps down .
loosen filler hoses

Let jack down slightly . u can reach in from front to release lines and wires .(big hands suck) lower jack and tank will come down .

Reverse install.

And dont leave hang you can damage lines /connectors/wires withthe stress on them..

Good luck

Wish u were closer I'd do if for ya.

cool - i've got the line tool

no floor jack. i've got my little bottle jack and some plywood. the tank's empty, so i'm not expecting anything too horrible, but i could always be proven wrong.

The jack is basically just to help hold things. . Also loosen up front strap so you can remove them easy if u nrrd to

ok, it's half down.

something inside the filler neck is holding it up. i've released both ends of the hose, but there's like an inner hose that i don't see where to release.

that and the sending unit are what's holding it up, but i can't get to the sending unit until this hose is out of the way. it feels like it's attached somewhere inside the tank. ideas?

it was just a hose that went 6" or so into the rear tank. i think the severe angle i had the inner hose at made it feel like it was attached. i lessened the angle and the inner hose came out.

now to the sending unit. i got the clip off and one of the fuel lines. i broke my damn disconnect tool getting the last one off.
...off to the hardware store grrr......

i can't get that last fuel line off. any stuck fuel line suggestions?

really...i don't need to disconnect it if i can get the sending unit out with it attached. how does the sending unit come out of the tank? do i pry up the little tabs on the tank, does it twist, etc?

It is a locking ring, drive it CCW a little with a dull straight screw driver (a notch in the center helps).
There is a tool for this but I have been unable to find it or buy it.
The new tank should have come with a new locking ring.

Spray WD-40 into the connection, twist the line back and forth to make sure the "O" ring is free.
Push in to the line, while holding it in push the release tool in all the way. While holding the tool all the way in pull the line off, you may have to pull a little harder than you think you need to.
If you get the release tabs bent backwards then you will have to release it with a very small screw driver and you can get a new spring tab thing at an auto parts store.

just finished. the stuck fuel line wouldn't come off. 2 broken "scissor tools" later, i bought a nice aluminum (or something) set for $20 and it came off in seconds. got it all back up in there and running.

i'll have pics of the nice, painted install and tool tomorrow or something.

in summary - little bummed that my scissor fuel line removal tool let me down. it just wouldn't get up in the line far enough to release the "grips".

here's the pics:

at least part of my truck is new/painted and nice looking

I have the upper set myself . But I use a set of plastic ones that have a small angled handle . Glad see is done. Next one will take only couple hours.

update: make sure you replace fuel pump while you're in there. i didn't b/c i didn't want to spend $150 at the time, but now it's worth that easily to not have to do this all over again.
