It`s only terminology. I`ve found when talking to people who don`t know the "correct" terminology, refering to them as step sides gets my point across to a broader audience. Once I was perusing a website that was talking about the various Ford engine families, and the original poster said that when you hear someone refer to a Ford as a big block, or small block, you should point at them and laugh, because that is a Chevy term. As far as I am concerned, that just proved his ignorance. Because it is not.

Throw the flare(step) side bed on it. There is plenty of short wides (oooh!) out there. As for the finish, and this is subjective, with Cherry, I would through a natural colored stain on first, and than maybe a marine varnish. A natural stain wont affect the tint of the wood, and will allow the top coat to be more uniform.

x2 :)

But. :(

;) <--------------------------

Proved whose ignorance, PT? ;)

...an FE/FT block is not a big block, it's a medium block.

That's been argued out many times with measurements included and all.
...on newsgroups in the 90's and later on website forums.

Ford designed a whole shtpot-load of engines. xD

More than GM and Mopar put together.

I'm not saying the multitude of engines Ford designed were all good. LOL ;)

It's just that two categories (big and small) don't cover it like it does
with GM and Mopar. xD

FE/FT = medium block

Wanna argue? ;)

I'm game for that. ;)

All I have to do is cut and paste what's been posted and -measured- that
shows the differences between a 385 series and the "90V" 89/302/351w's
and how the FE/FT is "in between". And don't fit into either big-or-small
engine block category like GM and Mopar engines do.

I'm not messing with you, I've owned an FE since I was 21, I've read quite
a bit about FE's. I'm way ahead of you. ;) It's a medium block engine. :)

Even Ford called it that back in the old days when bragging on it and why
it could kick both GM and Mopar's azzes' at the races.

That's just part of Ford's history.

Read it for yourself if you got time.

--------------------------------

I'm not sure but, kinda figure a 335 series is a "medium block" too?? <shrug>

You guys tell me. I'm not "into" 335's. Couldn't care less about 'em. LOL :)

--------------------------------

Cruise.

Nope! ;)

Ford calls it what it really is... "Speed Control".

--------------------------------

Posi-Traction? :/

Uhhh... well from what I've read Spicer/Dana designed -both- the "Posi-"
and what I've got in my '75 F150's Ford9inch that Ford calls "Traction Lok".

Again. You tell me. ;)

-----------------------------------

M5OD? LOL :)

M5OD = Manual 5-speed Overdrive.

M5OD-R2 = Mazda's heavy duty version of their M5OD-R1. Believe it?
M5OD-HD = ZF's 5 speed with Overdrive.

Don't believe me? ;)
That's cool.
Look it up for yourself in the Ford Truck Shop Manual, like I did. xD

Alvin in AZ don't like when dummies talk down to us st00pid people like
we don't know better. ...and expect to get away with it ;)

I do not know of a proper sealer, however if it were me i would first stain to desired color and throw some varnish on it. Then put the boards back in the truck. Varnish is sandable, so if it got scratched it could be fixed easily without pulling the bed.
