Sputtering and Stalling...

Bringing this one back...I put a new fuel filter in, getting plenty of flow from my fuel pump, dizzy is fine. I was driving around today with no issues, but the battery was getting harder and harder to start. I thought perfect, check the alternator, it was weak at best. I've previously had a similar issue where the alt isn't charging and the rig starts to draw off the battery and has similar symptoms. On the way home with the new alt, I have the symptoms again...I figure the battery is going dead. I put the new alt on and I'm good to go. Then driving around tonight, I get on it hard...and the symptoms return. I get where I'm going and when I leave no issues again. So with new filter, good fuel when in the driveway, good charge and spontaneous symptoms that seem to clear after shut down...I think I have crud in my tank. Great...I guess I know what I'm doing next weekend.

You might want to to a fuel quantity test when you are having those problems...I had the same sort of issue in my 79 Bronco and it turned out that the small rubber hose was leaking (fuel line) and sucking in air...got no fuel....only when hot.

x38 on fuel problem, btw

Check routing of lines in engine compartment, too close to the exhaust they can vapor lock..
Check all rubber lines, if they look anywhere near bad just replace them, they're cheap. Especially the one back near the tank, that one likes to bust.
If none of that works you might have crud in the pickup on your tank like was already said.. starts sloshing around when you're driving then gets sucked up to the screen.

My vote is for a dirty tank. I cleaned my more than a few times before reinstalling it and its still got rust particles coming up to my filter. Don't run those clear screen type filters with the glass casing that they sell at the parts houses. I run get a real element filter. My issue was that rust particles got on the needle and seat assemblies and caused excess fuel to drop in causing a buck or stutter when I drove it. A carb rebuild and a new filter solved it.

Sounds almost like what my truck was doing when the fuel cap isnt venting...

Also...no one metioned a float/needle issue...if its not the pump or filter thats the next stop in line....

So I ended up not doing anything to the Bronco since the last update. I drove it all week, no issues what so ever...so I figure whatever crud was in the tank either broke up or dissolved. I'm cruising along at 60mph today and bam, starts stuttering again. I let off, give it has again again...it sputters and backfires out the tailpipe. Then it was fine, drive the rest of the way home with no issues.
