Spinde bearing removal

Can someone tell me if the spindle bearings on a part time 4WD just tap out like the bearing races, or are they pressed in? What's involved with replacing them?

78 F-150 D44 front axle, part time with Warn hubs.

This is the bearing I am referring to. The one inside the spindle. The hub is a jeep hub and a pic from the pavementsucks.com website.

On the picture you have posted, the spindle bearing and seal are "pressed-in". Bearing races are "pressed-in" as well. Most bearings and races that are "pressed-in" can be installed using a press or a bearing/race driving tool. So to answer your question the bearing and seal in the picture you supplied can be removed with a slide-hammer and re-installed with a bearing/race/seal driver.

When disassembling an axle it helps to specify the year and model vehicle since there are numerous D44 configurations. For example the small broncos with the D44 axles used three different versions and the spindle bearings are installed in different ways on all three versions. There are numerous varitons of part-time and full-time D44 axles.

If you do not have a shop manual for your 1978 F150 you need to get one or maybe someone can email you the pages.

I have a screwdriver that has a slight bend to it that I can go from the other end of the spindle and drive the bearing out. The bend just makes it easy to contact the bearing.
