Congrats on fixing it Chris. As I said in your other thread mentioning her sale...she's not hurting anything just sitting, she's sat for 3 months as is. She's paid for, so outside of insurance and a tank of gas here and there, what's the big deal. If it's storage space, for less than 100 bones a month (well, in east coast money, dunno out your way) put her up in storage.

If you care about trying to prevent this sort of stuff from happening
to -him again- and many others, then you might see it as the torque
put to the bolt by-way-of the wrench by the novice without preparing
the corroded bolt the best it could be prepared ahead of time as may
be having a contributing effect? LOL

Just sayin', I'm seeing a lot of it posted and for some reason I manage
to get the corroded suckers out without breaking them off.

Should I keep my methods secret?

Funny thing is they aren't anything I came up with by myself,

First off-- you could have applied whatever techniques you wanted to these bolts, they were not going to come out without breaking. They were cold welded to the heads. Gallons of PB Blaser, reverse drill bits, bolt extractors, the whole 9 yards... None of them budged these bolts at all. Ended up having to drill them out and re-tap the holes.

That being said-- even if they weren't so crazy stuck in the holes, they were corroded enough that they basically broke themselves as soon as I put the wrench on them. I can you tell you that one side for sure had basically zero resistance when I put a wrench on it. It felt like the bolt was made of butter.

So get off your high horse. You're not a god.

What's going on with all the broken bolts I keep reading about?

It can't be that I'm -that- friggin' lucky can it?

You think it might be that when I feel a bolt taking too much torque,
I stop and hammer on it or something before I go and twist it off?

Or what is it you suppose?

I could understand if it were an old Bump from the rust belt or coast
of Kalifornia but this is a new truck for cryin' out loud.

Drop the post about broken bolts. I have had rust bucket rides that come apart and rust free new truck that broke . Its a gamble. And if not from of the lets stay 100 plus degree belt state its going to happen.
And it happens there.

I was hoping to get a discussion going about how to minimized broken
bolts, is all.

I hammer on almost all of them first.
It's just something we did at work and it carried over.
Hammer mechanics, all?

Another thing, once you get it moving and it gets the least bit tighter,
stop and go-back then work it back and forth ...as you take it out/off.
The idea behind that being...
Make the nut/bolt/threaded-part's threads, -better- for re-assembly.

And what's with the water leaking out of 351w's anyway?
I've got three and all three leaked where Scan had trouble!
Design flaw?
Factory assembly problem?
What can be done and forget the blame?

Don't be eating anything like that, over nothing! LOL

On older bolts I've had the best luck with using carburetor cleaner, yes better
than Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster, WD-40, ATF, motor oil, now motor oil squirted
on bolts that you're going to work on in a few days never hurt anything tho.

I've mentioned carburetor cleaner to a bunch of junk yard guys and they've
always came back with "straight antifreeze is better". But they have to deal
with vehicles from all over, the rust belt included and many of them are from
the rust belt too. I tried antifreeze and it didn't do anything special from
what I could tell. {shrug}

But on the front bumper bolts on my '91 Bronco and '90 and '91 parts trucks
heat worked wonders. LOL Second best thing on that "glue Ford used" is
chlorinated brake cleaner but a -very- distant second. Heat made 'em lubed
acting. LOL

I don`t know about anyone else, but the newer trucks seem to be more susceptible to breaking bolts. I think it has to with them being run hotter, and leaner, with less paint. I did a water pump on a 95 for a friend. 351. Two of the bolts that go through the timing cover broke before I had a chance to put any muscle whatsoever on them. Ended up having to chisel the timing cover off. The one bolt that I absolutely could not get out had so much rust and corrosion on it that it was kind of neat to see actually. It then screwed right out. Glad to see she`s back Scan, I`ve always liked that style crew.
