Sloppy Steering!

From over 2 years ago...

FWIW, my '93 wandered down the road like a lost puppy from day one to
day last. I blame the Twin I-Beam setup, and the constant camber changes.
Changing to bigger tires did help a bit, but I think it's still characteristic of
the breed.
I totally disagree with that. :)
FWIW ;)

I fixed my '75 F150 and made it handle real good, good like a new vehicle
and way better than when it was new. And the biggest problem I've seen
was with Ford's sorry wheel width choices. Ford's inability to size wheels
carried over to my '91 F150 and '91 Bronco. Same wheels on both and no
tires worth anything on the market to fit 'em. Choice is too narrow or too
wide and both squirrelly as heck.

I had a problem with the steering, changed box twice in two years. Was still too much slop. Don't know what it's called but had problem with slop on the bottom of steering column that hooks to box, it is tapered square and fits inside another square ( worn and sloppy) I have tried some small wedges and seems to be working.

Can you explain what you did and how you did it? I think that maybe that's the problem with my truck but I don't know how to open or look into the lower part of the steering column (below the rag joint) where it fits into the SB.....

My brother's F250 has tight steering... He claims that it's got something to do with the steering components in the half-ton trucks... Which is quite possible. I've had two 9th gen F150s and both of them have been super sloppy.

Skan knows this But

Ranger and up have same box . I have had all F150 to F450 and there r good and bad ones. Its some of parts after 20 years Box,tie rods,drag-link, Poor alignment. Weak shocks , steering shaft wear . All add up .

Steering box is a good bet and the much the much over looked linkage between steering wheel and the box. With tilt wheel can be worse.

Weak Front rear springs also cause issues
