Knocking, and leaking are probably sure signs. Dads trucks shocks didnt last 130K, but his has a diesel so im sure its harder on em. But they knocked like crazy.

By knocking, do you mean bottoming out? it seems like when i hit a bump its pretty loud in the front, like a knock sound?

i know the rebound trick, rebounds 3 or 4 times, not bad, but im getting that weird sound

I ran mine to about 220k...and replaced them because when I hit the brake pedal the front would dive so bad it was hard to steer. (If the road was bumpy, it was darn near impossible to control the thing under hard braking because the front wouldn't stay planted.) The back ones were getting a little noisy, too.

But, yeah- push down, let go, and count the bounces is a pretty good check.

And don't go with the Auto-zone cheapies. They improved my truck from unsafe to safe, but that's it. Really wish I'd spent the money on better ones.

Knocking like a bad balljoint knock. Just do what they say and push down on the front, it Should rebound quickley and bounce around after you stop pushing down. Unless you have a diesel and you stand on the tow hooks to push down and it still doesnt move.

Im sure you would know if your shocks was bad or not. Im starting to get a knock up front as well, i gotta check that out but im thinking the old age got to my shocks. Gonna be fun replacing 6 of em.

The rebound trick is what you need to do. If it's 3-4 times... it's time for new ones even if there are no visible signs of wear.

I am with Ian in saying that this isn't something to buy the cheapest version of. I bought the Bilstein shocks and am 100% completely satisfied. The ride improved noticably.
