Shell is back on the truck -- uglier than ever!

So we're headed out of town for Thanksgiving and my truck is most comfortable out of all the vehicles we've got (considering the luggage can be thrown in the back). Looks like rain's coming too, so I had to go up to my mom's place and grab my camper shell today :headbang:

I don't like the look of it but I'll be damned if it's not incredibly useful. It's also a bit cumbersome when trying to see out the rear of the truck, like when parking. Two sets of substantially tinted glass makes it pretty much opaque at night :headbang:

TADA!!!

Yeah...I hate running the topper on my truck. It's noisy, ugly, reduces rear visibility to effectively nothing, and greatly reduces my ability to haul medium-sized objects. (Had to call in a [gasp] Toyota to move a sheet of plywood for beer pong last weekend...)

But, like you said...they're incredibly useful. If I had somewhere handy to keep my trailer, better mirrors for backing up (don't ask), and a correctly-colored, reasonably aerodynamic f/g one, though...it'd probably stay on all year 'round. Keeps the tools out of the cab, gives me a nice place to sleep, and lets me haul people AND stuff, in the rain.

Oh and did I forget to mention that its got lots of scratches, dings, and scuffs now? Yeah it was being stored on the garage floor of Tom's shop and apparently people weren't so careful when navigating around it :headbang:

The topper doesn't look near as bad as the huge dent in your tailgate trim panel.

Have you ever thought of trying those slip on towing mirrors with the topper on? They might help.

What do you think those mirrors on the sides of your truck are for!?

How do you think I feel? The service body covers my rear window.

I agree! how did that get there?

Also - like your new avatar Chris. Did you make it?

EDIT: i'd try an arial type font instead of the times new roman in your avatar.

You mean one of these? Won't hold an adjustment; hence the giant stick-on convex one. Works fine when it's sunny and dry, but for probably half the 300 miles I drove today in a downpour, I couldn't see well enough to my left rear to dare change lanes. If it had been dark, too, I NEVER would have gotten out of the right hand lane.

Nahh... The mirrors aren't really affected by the topper. I just have a hard time seeing THROUGH it.

If your mirrors are intact and unaffected by the topper, what's the issue? With a crew cab and 6' of bed behind you, you can't see anything useful out the back anyway...

Reps to Vince! LMAO!

Having spent a lot of time driving trucks with limited rear vision, I mainly use my side mirrors, most of the time not even trying to look through the back window. That's why I thought of the mirrors.

Trust me I use my mirrors almost exclusively. But there are times where there's an object behind my tailgate, near the center of the truck, out of the viewing range of my mirrors (yes even with those extensions). It's just nice not to be blind out my rear window, that's what I'm trying to say. Not to mention that it's hard to check over my shoulder when changing lanes at night.

The dent in the tailgate has always been there-- previous owner did it.

Lol, yeah that pic makes dent look pretty bad.... [confused]

Funny thread guys. The camper doesnt look bad btw. :)
