Yeah I drove my brother's truck-- it's not bad. What do you mean "hard shifting"? The stiffness of the shifts is controlled by your left foot.

I think some one was unfamiliar with the truck, or the trans needs some rebuilding...
I can shift my truck very quickly... Only issue's are shifting into third and down shifting into second...

Those 2 gears got beat on pretty hard a few times...

I've flirted with the idea of dropping a manual trans into a Crown Vic for quite a while now.

While researching that, I remember coming across the name of a company that would burn custom chips/tuners/?? (I'm not knowledgeable about car computers) to make OBD2 Vics happy without seeing any inputs from the automatic.

Can't remember the name, (Blue Oval something, maybe?) and I need to leave for work, but I'll see if I can dig it up for you later.

Got any links? That sounds interesting, and sooner or later I'll have my old '94 back to play with.

I've driven both a zf and an m5od and I didn't notice any drastic differences.

Only ZF I've driven had 300k miles on it. Working miles, but maintained right and driven properly.

Flippin' thing shifts better than the rebuilt M5OD-R2 in my Ranger...which itself shifts way better than the 220k one it replaced.

No links on this laptop, but if you Google it you can find some write ups on Panther forums. Basically just use Mustang parts, and the only significant fab is getting the clutch pedal mounted.

They would know because they pull the codes when they test it. Even though the CE doesn't light up it'll still show when the codes are pulled. In Cali anything after about '75 has to be tested every two years.

I don't know what Parsons is.

Parsons is the company that rund the computers we use for State Inspections, anything 1995 and under here only requires a safety test, no emissions at all, meaning you could come in with NO cat and still pass provided it is 1995 and under. Technically, if its 1996 and newer without a cat, and doesnt throw a code, it can pass.

I know our system is the same as New York, but I was pretty sure Cali was the same too

MA & NY may have the same laws, but CA is much more strict and has been enforcing this since in the early 1960's. Yes MA has finally adopted some of CA standards but that is only in the last few years, and so they are not retro-active to earlier models. NY for example adopted CA emissions rules in 2005 but they do not take full effect until the 2016 MY vehicles.

In CA if your vehicle does not have the OEM emissions equipment installed and operational it is an automatic fail.

In 1959 the "CA Motor Vehicle Polution Control Board was created, to test vehicle emissions and set standards. In 1967 CA Air Resources Board (CARB) replaced CMVPCB and set emissions standards pre-dating the Federal EPA. CA has stricter tailpipe emissions rules than the Federal EPA.

smiliewhathesaid It wouldn't pass a visual inspection. This is the reason I couldn't install the longtubes. Yeah I probably would have passed the sniffer but not the visual inspection.

Thats how MA used to be, until Oct 1st 2009 when they adopted our new system.. there is no more sniffer test. All it is now is sensing "Monitor Readiness"

96-00 can have no more than 2 not ready, 01-Up no More than 1 not ready

Now, back to topic lol

Chris,

I was looking for something on the CARB website and found this information. Thought it may be of some use to you. I know the vehicle manufactures codes on your VIN & door sticker may cause you a problem with your intended swap.

"Transmission or Transaxle
Transmissions and transaxles changes alone are not legal. Transmissions and transaxles can only be changed along with their matching engine. The total engine transmission package must conform to the engine change requirements above.

Crap 'smiliedoh'

What are the odds that they'd actually check the numbers for the transmission? Better question-- what happens when someone's transmission goes out and it needs to be replaced?

Jmho, but I doubt that's actually "enforced" b/c that would put "most" repair out of business..

What the hell do i look like the Shell answer man? I am just passing on the information, you are over 18, so caveat emptor 'hah'

In all seriousness, click on the link and read the part about changing an engine & engine replacements, because the transmission section specifically refers to that section. It does say when you replace an engine it must be with the exact same kind and if it previously was CA ceritified it must be replaced with a CA certified engine. Also it says the vehicle must be inspected by a "state referee" station before it can legally be operated in CA again.

That's what I was thinking too...

It would not put repair business out of business, common guys read the entire page on the CARB website. There are specific steps for replacing a damaged part with an "identical replacement" part. Going from an automatic to a manual trans is not an "identical" replacement.:slap:

It does not matter if it was installed on other trucks, the CA rules specifically state you must replace parts with like for like on each specific vehicle. In CA vehicles that are sold in CA are certified by the manufacture to meet CA requirements at the time the vehicle is manufactured for the specific build of each individual vehicle. There were many options offered by the auto manufactures that are not legal for sale in CA.
