and now for the third time i will have a go at posting this message.i would like to re power my f100 with a diesel.i have been told about navistars,perkins,chevys,. fords without computer managment systems .i have also been told of needing a 6 speed auto and new transfer case.has any body out there done this?any advice would be very much appreciated.an yes this truly is the third time i have typed this mesage,i wiped the first 2 inadvertantly,yes i am new to the web ,and my log in name basenjiman comes from the basenji a barkless breed of west african dog i have one sitting next to me and if he could make any noise at all right now he would be laughing at my attempts at typing this message.oh and i would prefer to repower with a v8 diesel
If you want to go V8, your choices are pretty much IH/Navistar and the D max. The IDI is a mechanical injection system, better known as 6.9 and the & 7.3 motors from 83-94.5 model years.The Powerstroke motors all are electronic. As to having to use a 6 speed auto, not required, as all of the configurations came with manuals as well.
The one concern you will definitely have using an F100 chassis is the weight of the motor being a bit much for the chassis. These beasts weigh in arouns 1200-1500 pounds, while the 460 is maxed at 900 fully dressed.
I saw a single cab shortbed with an early 7.3 online the other day, and that truck had some major squat in the front, including pretty bad camber issues. You're definitely gonna need to stiffen the front suspension up to handle that weight.
