Or the front trans seal on a stick. Also a rear intake gasket will do it.

Another good point...had that happen to me on the Bronco this summer when I put the Eddy intake on...I laid a bead of silicone around, and missed a spot in the rear leaving about a 1/16" gap, and it had the rear main leak symptoms.

I think my rear main is leaking too. I'm not happy about it either. Brand new engine. Not sure what happened. My brother and I used the best gaskets/seals you can get, but still I think it's leaking. I'll have to check the other things out to make sure. I let my brother know too and he's not happy either. He did say that he has seen many new aftermarket crankshafts wear out rear main seals quickly. Not sure what's up with that. Oh well, I figure it's a growing pain. The good thing is, I can get the oil pan off real easy and probably replace the seal without pulling the engine or anything major. Maybe it's just something else.

Another thing with those front and rear cork intake gaskets is that they always slip out even when you let em dry overnight we did the 390 this last time without em and just put a VERY thick bead of sealant on there and a couple big dobs in the corners and no leaks with over 2 or 3000 miles.

I did crawl up under there and I'm 99% sure it is the main. 2 months ago I detailed the engine and believe me, it is clean and dry except for 3 places that have appeared. The rear main, the steering box and yes, the oil sending gasket, but I know about that one and it's gonna get fixed pronto! Like I said, I HATE leaks!! LOVE a clean engine!

Ok, I looked up in my shop manual and it is the 2 piece rubber seal. I will have to take off the oil pan and pump to get to it. Other than that is seems pretty straight forward, as long as I go slow and keep it clean. I won't have time for a while though to replace it, so guess I have t live with it for a while.

Buck, sorry about yours leaking on a new engine!! What a pain!

Ever since I got pulled over for smoking too much out my tailpipes I put 2 qts. of Lucas and 3 qts of straight 50 wt oil. Still smokes some but it did cure my rear main seal leak

The new motor should be here April 9th.

Try some Lucas or just a thicker oil and see what happens :)

FWIW I have a two piece seal and put a new one in with the motor out of the truck and the rear main seal leaked just like before. (And it was verified by 2 other people that it was in the right way)

Just a little reminder. When you put the rubber main seals in, make sure to put the bevel towards the front of the engine.
