Re-spray, or leave it?

Hey all, new to this forum. My wife and I recently took possession of a 79 short bed, 6.6L, Lariat, 4x4. My in-laws purchased this truck in 1980. Divorced in 1985, and my mother-in-law has had it garage kept ever since. It is really a bit of a time capsule. Interior is perfect, drives good…, but needs new front end bushings from dry rot. The issue is the paint! All original deluxe two-tone, and worse than I remember it being. The white is cracking, with lots of chips, and the red shows a little signs of life, but still, lots of chips. My first instinct was to keep the original paint, as a true survivor, but I’m I’m concerned about rust starting, especially along the trim pieces. I need advice, keep it original, respray, touch-up, and try and recondition? Etc.

Thanks

I have seen some cases where they shot clear over the original to protect it. It would require light wet sanding.
