Hi new to FTF, I have a question about fuel additives to improve whats going into my engine or if it's just a waste, and maybe harmful. I have a 2011 Ranger 4.0 V6 & I live in California we have our own "designer blend" gasoline, I hear of corn ethanol in the gas too. A friend of mine is always suggesting I add "marvel mystery oil" to my fuel to lubricate and condition things in my top end of the motor. Lucas gasoline additive is also out there. He says gasolines in California esp. are dry, and over time seals will dry out, varnishes will build up etc. & says MMO will prevent this, any Ford mechs. out there that really understand this before I would make such a move? I recently started using full synthetic oil to keep things nice on the low end, I want the best for my well cared for Ranger, what say you pros?
Thank You Rjim

Welcome to FTF.
My 2 cents is the newer engines were designed for today's gas blend so it really shouldn't need a additive. A occasional bottle of fuel system cleaner like Tectron won't hurt anything. Not sure if I would put MMO in a new vehicle I have in older carbed engines.

Welcome RJim. I have a98 Expedition that runs on 10% ethanol without problems. Like Randy said MMO is one I would not run in a newer vehicle. I use Seafoam to clean out my injection system, but will change to something better soon.

I would not run MMO in a modern engine.

They're designed for the modern fuels, and the oil isn't going to do any of the sensors any favors.

Note, however, that your 4.0 liter Ranger is NOT a "flex-fuel" vehicle, as some older Rangers (with the 3.0 liter six) and should not run the "higher-ethanol" blends that are available in some parts of the country. Gas around here is 10% ethanol, which works ok, but Ford recommends against 20% or higher blends such as E-85.

The only issues we've seen around in here with the ethanol fuel is the moisture attraction if you let it sit too long in the tank. Or more commonly in a plastic can for the lawnmower or power equipment that doesn't get used too often. As long as you drive enough to refill the tank every 2/3 weeks, all should be well. And welcome to FTF.smilieFordlogo
