Pressed in U-Joint replacement

Hi all, I need to replace the u-joint past the carrier bearing on my '83 extra cab F250. It's pressed in on both the slip yoke and the drive shaft. When I remove the clips, does it take much pressure to remove, I don't have a vise, but have large C clamps. I will mark the position of the components so I will not have any vibration issues, but what else can/should I know about tackling this job. Looks to be a pain in the butt.

thanks, :)

I kinda doubt you can press them out with a regular c-clamp.
Get a old/cheap socket that fits the u joint and tap it out with a hammer using the socket as a "drift pin"

Hi Randy, thanks. I was afraid that that might damage something ? How do you get the new one in when it's a 4 way pressed in joint ? I'm having a brain fart!

those you can press in with the c-clamp
Just pop the cap off one side of the joint and put the other one in the yoke being careful of the needle bearings and press it on, repeat for the other side of the joint.

The only thing you`ll damage is the old socket and the u-joint you`re taking out. It helps to have a socket the same size as the yoke, but bigger than the u-joint cap for the cap to drop into when you`re hammering on the smaller socket.

When you`ve got it apart, clean the rust out of the snap ring grooves. Then I take the caps off of the new joint, swab a little grease inside them to hold the needles, then I put the cross inside the yoke, put a cap on from the outside as far in as it will go, stick the cross in the cap and tap on the yoke to get it the rest of the way. Do the opposite side and then move on to the other yoke.

Just be careful and go slow and you`ll be alright.

thanks Justin!

at least the part is only $25, so if I do something, it's not costing me much :)

Also make sure the rear wheels are blocked before you remove the driveshaft from the differential. Don't ask me how I know this!:slap:

I think he refers to the whole truck taking a trip... I know Autozone has the ball joint press on loan program. I could ship you one of the units that still work, but got thrown out for various reasons... I have several.

The things you're GLAD that never got caught on camera. The front pumpkin took a chunk out of my scalp when the truck rolled over me. The truck was out in the street(residential), I was laying on the driveway collecting my thoughts, and my wife came out to the driveway and thought I was dead.
