pinion preload overload?

what would happen if the pinion preload was more than recomended? I had my pinion seal and flange replaced about a year ago, 10,000 miles and now am having a noise from the rearend and was just curious if the tech didn't do the preload correctly what would happen????

If it was to tight the bearing would over heat and excessive wear, if it was loose it'd wear rapidly also. Both would cause noise. Wouldn't be the first time i've seen it happen.

Yeah, too many techs just get the impact and crank 'em down without checking.
