Ping

Hey everyone, well ive been reading around and this is starting to get me worried...

Ok well my truck is making this annoying Pinging noise.... I take off and anything around 1k to 1600K it pings like crazy, i always think of what it would sound like when i took off and people was standing outside, because its embarrassing, but anything above 1800 its just gets really loud and i cant hear the pinging anymore..

Well ive read that the EGR will cause the pinging. Whys that? Also some guy put 91 octane fuel in his truck and he claims that his pnging went away, his timing was at 12 degrees, and someone said that thats not a good idea nore fix the problem because of pre ignition.

Then they got into compression testing and all that which is making me bite my nails..

Anyone have an idea? Il take it for a drive with a camera to see if i can hear it on there and post it...

Im defiantly going to be checking timing. How do you check for vac leaks?

Yes check your timing. I've got my timing at 14* BTDC and I noticed recently that it was making a pinging noise when bogging the engine while going up steep grades. To confirm the noise, I filled it with 91 octane and the noise stopped --- pinging confirmed. I'm gonna bump my timing down to 12 or 13* BTDC and see what it does :)

?? Youve got it at 10 but your gonna bump it down to 12-13? lol Do you mean u have it at 14 and ur gonna bump it down? I think my timing is off and its causing a few problems. Im getting good gas mileage tho so i cant imagine if my timing was right how much better it would be.... Also i posted in you other thread about the spout connecter. Do you have a pic of where it may be located?? Thanks

Well ive read that the EGR will cause the pinging. Whys that?

If the computer thinks EGR is flowing and it is not you could run into ping.

EGR allows for more advance because EGR cools the combustion temps. Thus when the computer thinks the EGR is flowing it advances the timing by quite a bit. If the timing gets advanced via the EGR logic and no EGR gas is in the cylinder you get ping.

Yes the engine pinged before tho.. Maby i can tell by the timing because i heard it could add 4 degrees timing.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA... OK i was on another forum and they brought this to my attention.... Now I have No cats, and there is that metal tube that goes from the smog pump and into the last cat. Well my tube is not welded in anywhere and its just chilling there... Will this cause pinging and what willl happen if its not welded in there?

The metal tube is for delivering air to the cats, connected or disconnect it is downstream of the O2 sensor so it has no effect on the way the motor runs and won't cause your ping problem. Don't you have your EGR blocked off.. or am I thinking of somebody else?

Ok kool, yes EGR is blocked off With the eleminator in place.

Yeah.. So let me ask you this, did you have the ping problem before the EGR eliminator?

Yea it was still pingy. Maby the EGR made it worse. I never really hardly complained about it till now...

That's what I was wondering. There was another thread somewhere I was reading about a guy that went through every possible combination with the EGR trying to eliminate it without causing excessive pinging and a CEL, the only thing that worked for him was to connect both the electrical and vacuum lines normally but put a blockoff plate between the valve and intake. Have you tried this?

The other thing I wonder about is the air injection system. The 5.0 I had developed a bad pinging problem when the check valve on the tube at the back of the motor broke. It's a bugger to get at but you should probably take this tube completely off and either plug the heads or at least make sure there are no leaks in the tube and associated parts and put it back on.

Another thing, if you have an EGR code set, and you do, the EGR strategy in the computer is disabled which means that the timing and fuel maps that take place during EGR are not in effect. Having said that, I find it highly unlikely that the EGR system is related to your ping issue.
