oil pump driveshaft

Hello everyone, I'm new here and have a question. I pulled the distributor out of my Ford truck, (its a 1978 with a 400 engine). The oil pump driveshaft came out with it for some reason and now I can't get the shaft to go back in the pump. I didn't think this was supposed to happen. Do I have to drop the oil pan now or WHAT?? Any help or thoughts on this would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks in advance, Rick...

it has to be lined up perfect with the pump. if it came out with the dist your lucky! most times they'll fall out of the dist and end up in the bottom of the pan. put a drop of silicone in the end of the dist and stick the pump shaft in it and let it sit a few hours then try again and again. some times you can get the dist timed and it wont drop the last 1/4 inch just bump the starter and she'll drop the rest of the way. just push down on the dist while ya bump the starter
