Looks like it just presses it. Carefully try to tap a screwdriver in between. It should pop out. That screen looks like it is clogged with something. Don't forget to prime the pump before you bolt it into the car.

They are largely press fit... sometimes you can work them around to get them out, but for the most part, you buy the pump with the sump installed... Is it a new pump? might be able to take the cover off and swap covers, or maybe get access to the inside of the sump.

Or like Fellro says you can try swapping the covers. Autozone shows you buy both pieces seperate so it should come out if you try getting a screwdriver in between or at worst case you will have to buy a new screen.

Try prying and you will either just be disappointed, or eventually do damage. Think about it, that has to stay there through all the miles the motor turns. If it came out that easily, it would do it under operating conditions. I have had some success (notice some...) by turning it and working it out. Getting it driven back in is almost as bad, have to be careful to not damage the pipe.

If it comes out it should be hard to go back in or it won't work. But sometimes it does work. He is looking to sell it anyway so I'd try it. If it slides in easily don't put it on the car LOL

Good. Hopefully this will solve your noise and you won't have to fix it for awhile.

Did you happen to spill anything and it's burning off?
