Hello,
I have a '92 Ford f-150 Flareside with 65,000 original miles. I've owned it for about 10 years and for the past two years have been trying to find a shop who can get to the bottom of what's going on with it. Two shops have taken it in, tried things, charged me money, but still, it's not fixed.
At first, it was bucking, engine knocking/smoking on hills only, limited power, but not bad. Had the injectors cleaned, oil pan replaced.
Now, after driving for 3 miles, hills or flat..it bucks, jerks right after it down shifts the first time. Check engine light comes on, goes off. Going up hills is almost impossible unless I put it in 2nd gear, which allows it to run pretty smoothly.
From the beginning, I thought it was the fuel pump, because it only happened on hills. Now, I'm not sure and neither are the shops. It's really costing me to much money to find out.
So far, I've had the fuel filter, plugs, (found 1 black and 1 broken plug), wires, distributor and coil replaced. He's done an injector test and is now concentrating on the fuel system.
This shop has had my truck on/off now for about 2 months. Enough!!!
Anyone have similar instances? The mechanic has asked me to do some research to help out. He is very experienced and reputable...I think he's at a loss too.
Can someone help me out with this one?

Welcome to the site. YelloThumbUp

Had a similar issue with my previous vehicle (96 F-150, 5spd, I-300) a while back, turned out to be a fuel filter.

Welcome aboard man.

Thanks for joining. I'm sure someone will be along shortly that can help out but if not try to copy your issue HERE That's the tech forum...sometimes the techs are busy and don't get a chance to check other forums.

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a mechanic, so I would only be throwing guesses around. However, we do have some pros here (as Aaron suggested) that should be able to help pin it down.

That is really low miles for that truck. Hopefully, it will be an easy (cheap) fix.

I moved this to the generation 8-9 forum.

It sounds like you have a multitude of problems all at one time. Did you get a chance to pull any codes?

Check engine light comes on, goes off.
If the CEL comes on you will have a code set in CM. You need this code read, it may tell what is going on.
He's done an injector test and is now concentrating on the fuel system.
Not sure what you mean by injector test, can you explain what the injector test was?
It is easy to tell if it is the fuel delivery system or not. Just tape a fuel pressure gauge to the windshield. It the fuel pressure is between 34 and 42 PSI when it happens the fuel system delivery system is OK for a V-8. The pressure should be 55 to 60 PSI for a 4.9L.
The mechanic has asked me to do some research to help out. He is very experienced and reputable...I think he's at a loss too.
Not sure if I can go along with you on this one. He should have read the CM codes and checked the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.

Welcome to the site! Like the other guys said-- pull the codes and see what you get. It may very well lead you in the right direction.

Since it's obd1 you will have a tough time figuring this one out without the help of an exhaust gas analyzer and a breakout box.
