Yeah I've seen those before, they're not new. Eco swears by them but I'm not really sure I trust it... I think it'd flow big particulate

Well they say, filters down to ONE MICRON!! taadaaa! it filters the air out of the air :p and its backed by racers :D

How much do they cost and how many "regular" or OEM filters could you get for the same cost?

Lots of times it comes down to the bottom line for me.

Racers will run without a filter if it will gain them a time/speed advantage. Remeber racers break and rebuild stuff regularly. The race car only has to stay together for the duration of the race. Your truck has to last tens of thousands of miles.

More air flow requires less filtration.

I was joking! lol I know races and all the dumb clams are just noise.
No what I mean is after awhile they do pay for them selves..

Maybe. If they do not filter as well then you will be increasing the wear & tear on your engine resulting in repairs needed sooner do to poor filtration. This will cost you more money in the long run.

What about the so called independent test done on them, are they truly unbiased?
but according to the "independent tests" they filter just as good as the paper filament filters.
What say you on that?

The catch is independent by who, and financed by who. If it is truly an independent test of multiple brands & types of filters then it will have more creedence.

If the filter flows more air then it cannot filter as well. If it filters as well then the airflow will be the same or less. Another thing to consider about increased air flow, many oem filtration systems supply more air than the engine can use, so increase the air flow will result in zero performance gains.

I am not totally against AM filter systems or AM parts. But significant time & research needs to be spent to see if the AM parts really increase performance. The majority of AM parts claims are more hype than substance. There are AM parts that work very well for a particular application, but to find them requires alot of real world testing, by the average user to determine if there really is a benefit provided. AM parts manufactures/dealers are in the business to make money plain and simple.
Anytime you add an AM "performance part" you must do a cost benefit analysis and then test it on your specific vehicle for your specific use to determine if there was any benefit provided for the cost.

Who is displaying that "independent" test? You can bet that it's biased against whoever is displaying the results. I only trust test results when they're done by a company that is not COMPETING in the race YelloThumbUp

Also if they are using a dyno for there testing data, then take it with a large grain of salt. As dyno results can be skewed by the operator at will.

The only way to properly test air filters is in a lab with an approved air test box, and special weighed & measured "particle test media" and/or a soot generator.

Hmm ok, thanks a bunch guys for your help :D
I think I will change out the KN filter on my Ranger with one of these, just for the reason that it will stop getting oil on my air flow sensor..

If you don't have performance mods that warrant the need for more air flow (and it would require a lot of mods to get to that point) then I suggest you don't waste your money-- stick with a paper filter. It'll most likely flow more air than you'll ever need on a near-stock engine.

Removing the wet oil type filter cartridge would be a definite step in the right direction. You may want to also consider the OEM paper element from your local auto parts or Wally World.

If you are dead set on a washable filter, you may want to look at AFE also, as they make a dry filter and have a pretty good reputation.
