midship plastic gas tank woes

After much scrubbing on the outside of the tank, I did finally find a part number. I did a pencil rubbing onto a another piece of paper and came up with D7TA9104G. Now, I'm confused because this doesn't match any of the numbers that Bill came up with or the scan that Dennis produced showing capacities.

Does the above number match any numbers that somebody has listed?

What you found is not a part number.

Ford did not put any actual part numbers on parts after 1956.

D7TA-9140-G is an ID engineering number.

Sometimes these ID numbers are close to the actual part numbers. Sometimes, they are not.

Where did you say you found this number?

9140 is the Ford basic ID number for a fuel filler vent hose, which was only sold with the filler hose. It was not available by itself.

D7TZ-9A141-A is the elbow used with this hose.

The only number that appeared on fuel tanks, was the actual part number on a glued on 2" x 2" paper label. This was only done on service parts.

Service parts: Replacement parts sold by FoMoCo Dealers at the parts counters.

Bill, the number was just below and to the left of the fill pipe. It is stamped on the tank itself. The number was 9104.

9104 = ID engineering number for a fuel tank, which is Ford basic part number 9002.

I do not have any Master Cross Reference Catalogs that cover 1973/79's, so there's no way I can give you the actual part number.

I do have these catalogs for 1957/72, there I see dozens of 9104/9002's.

Sometimes, these ID numbers appear in parts catalogs, most times, they do not.

These Master Cross Reference Catalogs were sent out twice a year. These catalogs convert Ford ID numbers to actual Ford part numbers.

Today, these catalogs are very hard to find...because when Ford went to computers, most dealers threw these into the trash along with the bound and loose leaf paper parts catalogs, O-S-I (Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange) Catalogs, and these same catalogs on microfiche...cuz everything is now on CD's.

I have the O-S-I catalogs on microfiche that cover 1948 thru 1991. These are not used at all for parts that are less than five years old, because when the part number is typed into Ford's parts locator system, the replacing part number(s) come up.

Ford is in-famous for replacing 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY fracatta year. Trying to keep up with all this jazz was/is a royal PITA!

One example: The original 1965 part number for the 240/300 exhaust manifold (240 thru 1974) that was used 1965/83 was replaced EIGHT additional times!

Why? Who the hell knows!
