Lots of Work on the truck this week

Just thought I'd share. I was working on the truck pretty constant over the last week getting a lot of things done.

The top end was full of vacuum leaks and the truck was running rough. My throttle position sensor was toast and the transmission was shifting hard. I had a pair of headers that I have been intending to put on for a while... My oil fill cap broke off in the valve cover, so I needed a new set of those. I put in a new PCV valve while I was at it (that set me back a whopping $1.49)

Anyway, I forgot to take many pictures, but I grabbed a couple.

It was a pretty seamless job. I only had one hitch. The EGR tube on the stock manifold wouldn't fit with the new headers. The headers placed the tube forward of it's stock position, so I had to fab a new tube.

Anyway, lots of fun for me.

Nice work man. So you've had a few days to use the headers after we talked on the phone. What are your impressions?

And where did you have vac leaks? In the lines?

it looks like that was a lot of fun! I like the valve covers, they look good. A black/silver upper intake to match would look cool.

A question that may help me with a project... in your 2nd picture down, it looks like 2 heater hoses in the lower right of the picture. The heater hose on the right appears to connect to a metal pipe of some type. How does this pipe connect to the water pump?

I don't believe those are the heater hoses. I'm not sure what they do, I just moved them out of the way. My heater hoses run up closer to the passenger side fender and go through the firewall up near the top corner.

And CHRIS!! I don't want to hear about the header paint!!

Oh I knew that years ago... I just didn't feel like forkin over the money for ceramic when these headers will probably outlast this motor's life.

Those lines are coolant lines for the intake plenum. Helps vaporize the fuel from the injectors too.

The paint just added weight, and everybody knows weight = slower! :rofl2:

Ryan, you could just grab some hightemp paint and repaint them.

Looks good though!
There is a "RIGHT" and a "WRONG" way to paint headers, even with hi-temp paint.
Since you probably don't have a curing oven at your disposal, the trick we used to use was to paint the headers in whatever color you choose, then install them completely. THEN, start the motor and let it run for several VERY SHORT periods, with a cool-down inbetween. Each runtime can be just a little longer than the previous. What this does is effectively "CURE" the paint into a rock-hard finish.
That being said, prolly could have gotten them powder-coated for about 50 bucks for the pair.

Surprisingly, the bbq grill paint still hasn't burnt off the scout's headers.
