Looking for advice on exhaust

Hello,

Just finishing up the install of my explorer 5.0 with MAF conversion in my 1991 f-150 4x4, E4OD. I used the truck exhaust manifolds for now, I still have the factory Y pipe but have reduced it to a single cat. I have heard good things about the flowmaster 50 series and am thinking of giving it a try. I am trying to figure out what size to go with, I am thinking 3" single all the way back but I don't know if thats the best way to do it. Also should I clear out the front cat or leave it alone. Would do more but need to make some more money first. Blew my wad on the new motor.

I think a 3" single will be the best way to go. If you feel the need to go duals, I'd go no bigger than 2.25" pipe. Never really been a fan of gutting cats, if it were me, I'd go with high flow cats. As for the muffler, do a youtube search and you'll be able to do comparisons on sound. Personally, I don't like FM's and would go with something from Magnaflow or Hooker.

3 Inch should be ok for what you want. I'm assuming you made some mild mods? Also, the Dynomax has proven better numbers than the flowmasters as has the Magnaflows. Just a thought. You could gut that cat if you wanted....but it'll just act as a resonator which still restricts flow. I'd actually suggest redoing the exhaust with a 2 into one setup minus cats.

I have used magnaflow in the past with good results, but i'm not looking for big sound, just nice mellow sound. When I can afford it I plan on magnaflow high flow cats. I just need to put something together with what I have now with a new muffler and I will do a turn down behind the muffler till I can get a new pipe out back.

3" is to much for the 5.0 imho... Unless its not truly a 5.0 anymore...

2.5" will be plenty an engine does need some back pressure to run most effeciently...

I change over to the Bassani y-pipe w/ cats and run a good muffler int a 3" single exhaust. I'm running tri-y/ long tube combo and I have pelenty of power on the low end and run like a bat outta hell trying to get down 840 with a trailer behind me....

3" single is a good way to go with the muffler of your choice.

Exhaust is done... new y pipe into single 3" high flow cat with single magnaflow 3" 5x8 oval with a turn down. Sounds great and looks good too.
