Lookin' at a 1979 F-250!!

Hey Y'all!

I found a 1979 Ford F-250 that i'm hoping to get soon.

It has a 351M and a 4 speed trans. What kind gas mileage can I expect from it?

10, on a good day. I've seen as bad a 7.

Looks nice...

I'm saying 8. I get a whole 4 1/2 to 5 MPG with the 429.

I get 6mpg's from the 400 in Red, but that's not quite stock. I got 14mpg's from the 351M in the Bronco. Honestly though, I wouldn't say 10-12mpg's would be outside the realm of possibility.

get it a truck aint supposed to be a gas saver lol. nice truck. my 78 f250 with 351m and c6 and a edelbrock 600fm 4 barrel gets better milage than my 85 cutlass supreme with 350 rocket, 650 holley, 350 automatic, its stock exept mild cam. its sad my 3/4 ford does better on gas.

My 351M gets between 8 and 12 depending on how hard I push it. Its newer and fuel injected, so you're probably look at 10 or less on average.

You sir have a 351W. Ford had 3 different 351's. They had the 351C (Cleveland), which is part of the 335 engine series. They had the 351W (Windsor), which is what you have and part of the small block family. Then there was the red headed step child, the 351M (M??????)...it isn't documented anywhere what the M stands for, but some guys believe it stands for Modified because it's the exact same engine as the 400, just de-stroked. Some people believe it stands for Midland because that's where alot of them came out of. And there are lots of other theories on what the M stands for, personally, I just think it was a marker to differentiate between the C's and W's.

Came out of...exactly where?

How many F100/350's came with a 351W prior to 1981? N-O-N-E.

How many F100/350's came with a 351C? N-O-N-E. 1970/74 Passenger Cars/Ranchero's only.

351M: 1975/79 Passenger Cars / 1977/79 F100/350 / 1978/82 Bronco / 1980/82 F150/350 & Econoline.

M = Modified. This is noted in the parts catalogs, and is what Ford Service & Parts rep's, and Ford partsmen always refered to the engine as.

M does not refer to Midland, why would it? Ford never had any engine plant located in any Midland, TX or otherwise.

I got that part Bill, but the guy I quoted has an 80's truck with a Windsor in it, so I was just trying to differentiate for him because he seemed confused on the notation.

Damn...I thought I got it from you back when I was on FTE that the M didn't stand for anything. Guess I was wrong. As for Midland...I was just offering up a theory.

Yes, I understood why you posted the info, but not everyone is aware of the various 351 applications, or that no 351C's were ever installed in trucks or Bronco's.

You didn't get this M jazz from me, I know better.
