KdPate's Mass Air conversion done on the cheap!!!!

KdPate

After Hours Garage
I've been contemplating this for a good while now but have decided to do it: I'm converting the truck to mass air. To give you a little background on the 87-91 trucks, Ford set the computer up to be a Speed Density bank fire setup i.e. it fires 4 injectors at once instead of one at a time (bad for fuel mileage and emmisions; might as well kept a carb on there). Plus upgrading to a better exhaust, camshaft, heads, etc. leave little to no margin for the computer to upgrade. Now I'm changing that. On with the goods (used of course):

The mass air meter and computer. Both are from a 1993 Mustang Cobra

The wiring harness from the same car. Going to have to modify it in order to intergrate it into the exisitng truck wiring harness.

After removing the sheathing and pinning out the connectors I was able to seperate the injector harness for the rest of the main harness. Themain part I actually needed was the injector harness since most of the sensors are the same between the vehicles; just in different locations.

In the end I was able to get the main harnesses I needed. The injector harness and the MAF harness...

I also managed to complete the "overlay" harness as well and pick up this gem at Pull a Part for $17....

Installation was pretty much "plug-and-play" to say the least. Disconnect the existing injector plugs, overlay the injector/MAF harness, etc. The real PITA was when it come time to re-pin the 60 pin connector. Removed 3 pins entirely, remove, re-locate 4 pins, add the injector harness/ MAF sensor pins. Done. I ran a jumper for the HEGO sensors combining the left and right (IIRC the Ford Racing kit did the same thing) and used the MAF I found @ Pull-a-Part. So far I have only one code for a canister purge selenoid whic my truck doesn't have.

Here is what I've learned doing this:

1) the fabled X3Z (1993 Cobra computer) WILL WORK. Even with the 19lb injectors and the 1994-1995 V6 Mustang MAF it runs very good. No lean-out whatsoever.

2) The firing order and the injector pinout need to correspond with each other. It idled like **** initially until I matched the injector and firing order. Non-HO firing order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. HO/351W firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Only have to swap around the pins forinjectors 3, 4, 5, and 7 to get it right. Runs very smooth.

3) 87 octane + 15 degrees of timing + MAF conversion = SPARK KNOCK FROM HELL!!!!!! Bumped the timing down to 11 degrees and all is well.

That is all........for now.......smilieFordlogo :wasntme:

Cool! :)

I need an intake Y pipe, will try huntin' one down soon. :)

Been figuring on getting a Moates Quarter Horse.
Does a guy need a wide-band O2 sensor and controller for that?
...and the software and the laptop to go with that, does it ever end? ;)

Got so far... A9L (and an A9P I don't want) a '93 Crown Vic air filter
housing with 70mm MAF sensor and a pair of Mustang O2 sensors. :)

I'm wanting to just wire-up my own engine harness. :)

But I got three bung holes... ;)

Alvin,

If you cannot locate the 95-96 MAF Y-pipe from an F-series truck the next bezt alterative is the K&N FIPK kit for a 95-96 F-series/ Bronco truck. It will be more expensive but will save you time from hunting around. I'm running the X3Z un-tuned at this point but not having any issues whatsoever (might purchase a Tweecer later on). As far a the O2 sensors, if you already have two bungs ready to go, use those and plug the third one at the Y intersection.

Good job Farm Truck Driver smilieFordlogo Do you have any pics of the pin connector before and after? I know, always wanting something smilietease

smilietease Nothing to show on this Tim. It's just a bunch of wires coming out of the 60 pin with a few bridge wires. :( Here is some side notes I made on doing the swap from the pinout spreadsheet I made:

Truck Harness to Mustang Computer (HO Firing order)

Add Pin # 9 (MAF Return)
Move Pin # 11 to Pin # 32 (TAD)
Add Pin # 12 (Injector # 3)
Add Pin # 13 (Injector # 4)
Add Pin # 14 (Injector # 5)
Add Pin # 15 (Injector # 6)
DELETE Pin # 23 (Knock Sensor)
DELETE Pin # 24 (Pwr Steering Sensor)
Add Pin # 42 (Injector #7)
JUMP Pin # 43 (HEGO left) to Pin # 29 (HEGO right)
JUMP Pin # 44 (HEGO Ground left) to Pin # 49 (HEGO Ground right)
Add Pin # 50 (MAF signal)
Move Pin # 51 to Pin # 38 (TAB)
Add Pin # 52 (Injector # 8)

*Pin # 19 (FPM) to be tapped into
pink/ black wire on fuel pump relay

Truck Harness to Mustang Computer (289/302 Firing order)

Add Pin # 9 (MAF Return)
Move Pin # 11 to Pin # 32 (TAD)
Add Pin # 14 (Injector # 3)
Add Pin # 42 (Injector # 4)
Add Pin # 12 (Injector # 5)
Add Pin # 15 (Injector # 6)
DELETE Pin # 23 (Knock Sensor)
DELETE Pin # 24 (Pwr Steering Sensor)
Add Pin # 13 (Injector #7)
JUMP Pin # 43 (HEGO left) to Pin # 29 (HEGO right)
JUMP Pin # 44 (HEGO Ground left) to Pin # 49 (HEGO Ground right)
Add Pin # 50 (MAF signal)
Move Pin # 51 to Pin # 38 (TAB)
Add Pin # 52 (Injector # 8)

*Pin # 19 (FPM) to be tapped into
pink/ black wire on fuel pump relay

289/302 firing order: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

302HO/351W firing order: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Note on the HEGO jumpers this is if and only if you are running one O2 sensor. If you are running 2 O2 sensors per a Mustang, then ignore it and run as is.

Hmmm... I may need to do more lookin into this...

or the xplorer is gettin a carb! WOOT

Stay EFI...while I prefer carb due to simplicity and because EFI scares me, caused by my own ignorance (the whole E thing again), EFI is far superior.

Psh whatever, nothing beats the smell of inefficiently burnt gas fumes coming out of a roaring tailpipe...

Alvin,
...locate the 95-96 MAF Y-pipe from an F-series truck...
Cool thanks for the information, wasn't sure which vehicles had 'm. :)
I'll try that first route first because I'm cheap, retired and also cheap too. ;)
Econolines have 'em?

The ones with the arrows, guessing "dual outlet" and then swap
it end-for-end, and run the air through it backwards, right? LOL :)
