Ok so i reading on one of the other forums im on not gonna name names but yeah. So i read that instead of doing any kind of air box mods you could insulated the intake hoses to protect the air from heating up. really a great idea i thought. and there was a great link showing the test results. http://www.performanceunlimited.com/projectmpg/airtemp.html

so i was wondering what you guys idea was on this? and what type of insulation should i probably use?

hmm in theory it will actually work. the colder the air going into the motor the better the engine will run. it will improve HP and MPG...not a lot though but a bit noticable depending on what you do. if the whole intake is insulated im sure you could squeeze a MPG or 2 outta it.

AND I WANT THAT TRUCK IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!

I *betcha* it would make such a small difference you wouldn't notice and would just take up substantial amounts of room in your engine bay. I thought about doing the same thing, but chose against it.

that all seems to rely on too much of an "ideal situation".

my car bakes in the sun all day while i'm at work. my interior thermometer usually tops 150*. the engine bay and components have to be 120*. even wrapped in insualtion, after 9 hours in the sun, it's going to be pretty hot. if i parked in a garage with AC and kept a good amount of air moving it seems like it could be useful, but at least for me, i don't think it'd be worth it.

Insulating the intake duct is a fairly common thing to do. The theory behind it can't really be disproven-- colder air = more effiency and power. I don't know if the differences will be noticeable but I'd sure like to find out. This is something that I've been considering for a while.

I did it. I didnt notice a real difference, but I never really took it easy. I can take pics if you want.

ok sure. what type of insulation did you use and other materials? bout what is north dakota's average summer temp would you say? it might be a larger difference here in the south. just a thought.

i wonder if you can do the same/better with a larger diameter pipe around the whole thing with insulation between the two pipes. might look less "custom"

That would kind of defeat the purpose...the point of it being reflective is to reflect the heat.......the pipe in pipe thing is actually a good idea...it's alot like what mechanical guys do when they sleeve a deck for a pour...there is also an expanding foam out there that you mix part a with part b and pour it in...Jesse James used it on the Monster Garage Beetle......In all honesty I think the insulation would make a minimal difference...however building an enclosure around the two intake tubes as a whole with an access hatch then filling it with ice or dry ice would probably make a noticable difference.
